Former DAS official gets 8-year prison sentence

Jorge Alberto Lagos plea bargained, from 16 years to eight. He was the head of the DAS counterintelligence section of the DAS.

First of the alvarito's DAS thugs to go to prison. Two others are also plea bargaining.

Will be interesting to see whether Maria Pilar de Hurtado will also fall on the sword for alvarito. She was the head of the DAS when the Supreme Court judges, opposition politicians and journalists were being wiretapped, followed and investigated. She reported directly to uribito at the presidential palace.

1. He had every chance in the world to avoid committing these crimes. Glad he's going to prison.
Too bad he can't do 16, but at least he's going.

Too bad they can't send him to the Valledupar penetentiary, discussed in Downwinder's post yesterday.

His photo shows a completely angry face. He must have expected the government to protect him, too, from his crimes done under their orders. He doesn't realize he was given a conscience for a reason. Hope he'll have every minute of these 8 years to think about it.

Two more like him up to bat, and then Maria Pilar de Hurtado? Sure hope Lagos got the ball rolling and it will gain powerful momentum by the time it gets to Hurtado.

Thanks for this news, rabs. We really need to know.

3. How come the Colombian court is "looking backward" and not "looking forward,"
like our President said we must, regarding prosecuting powerful people for their crimes? Hm?

Cuz crimes for which people are prosecuted happened in the past, maybe, and the Colombian court, um, knows this? Lagos is not going to prison for something he may or may not do in the future. He is going to prison for what he DID do, IN THE PAST. And you have to look backward, um, to see it.

Jeez, that bugged me. "We need to look forward not backward." You'd think a Harvard legal scholar could come up with something better than that, to cover his lack of power as to prosecuting, or even investigating, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld & brethren. (Lack of power, or the deal he made to be permitted to become president.)

In any case, it is yet to be seen whether or not "Obama's rule" applies to those giving the orders in Colombia--Uribe and William Brownfield.
