Even as many Latin American democracies enjoy historic levels of press freedom, a pattern of creeping authoritarianism has surfaced, as governments seek to restrict freedom of expression, viewing media conglomerates as a threat to their populist agendas.

The trend illustrates the fragility of democracy in the region – and its strength, as the press and citizens from Argentina to Venezuela mount a strenuous resistance to state efforts to muzzle them.

Many campaigns to silence the press come from left-wing governments, despite positioning themselves as defenders of human rights.
