Seven Colombian military members sentenced for 'false positives'
Seven Colombian military members sentenced for 'false positives'

Alexander Stone

Seven members of Colombia's military were each sentenced to 20 years in prison for their role in the "false positive" killings of three civilians who were then presented as enemy combatants.

The judge in Antioquia sentenced one official, two subofficials, and four soldiers for the murder of three street vendors, which took place on June 26, 2006.

The army troops then reported the death of three alleged rebels who had supposedly extorted people in the northwestern municipality of Abriaquie, Antioquia.

The family and friends of the victims said that the men had been contacted on the eve of their deaths by unidentified men who offered them work on a farm in the area.

Nothing like some social cleansing to add some instant class, is there? From what I've read, this has been routine in Colombia, even chronic drunks. Cheaper than rehab, apparently. More money left for the greedy.

1. K&R! Antioquia is where Alvaro Uribe got his start--who ran Colombia like a mafia don for
the Bush Junta. He is notorious there for his ties to rightwing death squads, and it is no surprise at all that the Colombian military, under his command, felt impelled to slaughter poor people to up their "body count."

Although Uribe is clearly a CIA "made man"--perhaps not with the quite protected status of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld & brethren, but pretty high up there--and despite the Obama administration's protection and even coddling of Uribe, and all their efforts to foil Colombian prosecutors--I hope the Colombian justice system is able to get at Uribe and other top criminals. These soldiers and subofficials are way down in the hierarchy of evil-doing in Colombia.

2. it is worth noting that numerous stories have been posted regarding prosecutions
for these crimes against innocents many of them by the thread starter. while the murders are inexcusable it is encouraging to see this agressive prosecution in Colombia.
