Cuba Defeats U.S. in Olympic Baseball Semifinal

BEIJING, China, August 22 (acn) Cuba overwhelmed the United States 10-2 on Friday night and thus advanced to the gold medal game of the Olympic baseball tournament in Beijing.

The Cuban win came behind a strong 14-hit attack that included four homeruns and excellent pitching performances by starter and winner Norge Luis Vera and closer Pedro Luis Lazo.

With the Caribbean squad leading 4-2 in the eighth inning, Alexei Bell hit a three-run homer to put the punctuation mark on the defending champions' victory. Then, catcher Ariel Pestano added his own three-run shot three batters later to seal the score.

Alfredo Despaigne and Frederich Cepeda also homered for the winners.

The Cuban team, which had already defeated the Americans in the preliminary round 5-4, will play Saturday night against the unbeaten South Koreans who rallied past Japan 6-2 in Friday's first semifina

Didn't see as much of the first pitcher as the other one. He was amazing.

Hope they win the last game. The announcers said that Cuba has been to the final round every time in the last five years. Not too shabby, by god.
