Obama family distributes Thanksgiving treats (w/Photos)
http://www.jacksonsun.com/article/20091125/NEWS01/91125030/1002/rss

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama family is passing out turkeys, stuffing and other Thanksgiving favorites to people at a food pantry organization.

President Barack Obama tucked pumpkin pies into people’s bags at Martha’s Table in downtown Washington on Wednesday evening and wished them a happy holiday.

Obama’s two daughters, first lady Michelle Obama and her mother, Marian Robinson, worked alongside the president, putting canned food, stuffing and fresh vegetables into bags. The president’s mother-in-law also handed out bags with frozen turkeys.

Children who attend educational services at the organization designed some of the bags, which were printed with the words ‘‘Every bag counts.’’

1. This is being unrec? How low can people get? What could possibly
be distasteful to anyone about this post?

There are some real losers here lately.

2. Lately I've noticed that positive posts get a few unrecs almost
immediately. Fortunately they are quickly countered by recs.

26. This could be resolved if moderators would take my suggestion:
I'm referring to BuzzFlash.com where to rec an article you click a square button (both positive and negative) and the number is raised. At the same time, your registered user name appears in seperate box areas below. I keep harping on this to the moderators but have never heard from or seen a result response. This would have the effect of flushing out those negative attacks on such a positive story.

34. or you get a certain number a month - use them wisely...

in the end, the story reached the greatest page, so maybe the admins figure it works anyway the way it works now, but it does surprise me to see the unrecs on some of the most benign stories.

38. ahhh.. well maybe 'unrecs' are a benefit of donating, like seeing no-ads

then at least you know even the freepers are having to spend some money in support of the DU - and those who don't donate still get 1/4 unrecs... so it takes 4 freepers to make one unrec

maybe Nate Silver at fivethirtyeight.com can come up with a formula that is fair-ish :)

What have the Recommends /Not done to make DU a more intellectual and safe place to visit?

I don't like to get in a verbal fist fight to have an intellectual discussion.

Can we ban all the FU's from DU ~ it is so beneath us, especially when we are all suppose to be on the same TEAM - I thought that DEMOCRATIC Underground meant that we were all on the same train ~ working to make the Democratic Party stronger, not tear it down.

I may not like Charter Schools and the War, you may think differently that I do ~ I have no problem with a difference of opinion. But, I didn't come here to be verbally abused OR to see others Verbally Abused.

New FORUM Idea : Can we have a FU Forum for those that want to get in a verbal fist fight and act like Glen Beck? They can beat each other up with words and spit on each other, whatever they want to say or do, it should be within the DU playbook for that Forum.

Happy Thanksgiving

15. I'd like the unrec gone - but at least a vacation from it until after the New Year
So many "good works" and holiday posts will get the grinch treatment. I'd like a break from it.
K&R for the thread.

30. I'm going to add to it...
because when the first reply to a post has nothing to do with the subject matter, but is instead some "unrec" nonsense, I'll unrec that thread, because reading it is pointless since you know off the bat that the content of the discussion isn't about the OP, but this kind of shit that we're engaging in now.

I'm sure you didn't intend to be negative or spiteful, but you may want to refrain from knee-jerk postings. It doesn't cast a good light on either the subject or the poster.

41. I think they assumed that ...
... Martha's Table is probably a homeless shelter, therefore giving out food that needs to be prepped and cooked to homeless folks is kindof odd. However, this may just have been a 'gathering point' to get the food bags distributed to low-income families, not just feed the homeless.

Easy enough to misunderstand, give the person a break. It is supposed to be the holiday season where we spread understanding and good cheer, not instant derision.

people wouldn't be standing in line accepting a turkey that they had no plans of eating.

Do people even think about what they post for one second before hitting submit?

Wonderful pictures of President Obama and his family volunteering. I like how first Grandma is in the mix too.

I'm glad he isn't using his official job as an excuse to stop volunteering.

21. have we ever had a first Grammy in the White House before?
I can't think of one
But I think it was one of the best decisions ever to have her there. And not just because it is good for the kids but for all of us to see that they are family.

Edited on Thu Nov-26-09 10:09 AM by debbierlus
This isn't trick or treat. It is people not having enough food to eat and people not being able to afford a thanksgiving dinner.

Really weird title.

40. Bless his heart!
That truly shows that even the one person in the most important job in the land can reach out to a local charity and contribute, regardless of what the freepers are saying.

It's noble and above all it shows that President Obama cares about the community, not for show or publicity. Besides, what are the repukes doing this holiday? Where are the photos from those idjits? Are they reaching out to their constituents in this manner? Unless they actually have compassion, perhaps not.

BTW, my brother and his family are over at Martha's Table volunteering right now, so with that the contributions to the community, especially in that part of Washington, continues and I for one am very proud.

Thank you very much, Mr. President!!!
