Thompson backs Gillibrand
http://blog.timesunion.com/capitol/archives/22615/thompson-backs-gillibrand/

They were a seat away from each other at Sunday night’s gala dinner, and interacted over the course of last weekend’s conference of the Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators.

Now Bill Thompson, the former New York City comptroller who was said at one point to be eying Gillibrand’s seat, has endorsed her.

“I was impressed with how warmly Kirsten was received this weekend at the Legislative Caucus. It is clear that our Senator has built strong partnerships over the last year and has the right priorities for New York,” Thompson said in a statement. “She’s spent times in communities across the state and understands exactly what so many New York families are going through right now. From cutting taxes for small, locally-owned businesses to putting more New Yorkers back to work and fighting for justice, fairness and equality for every single New Yorker, Kirsten is a proven fighter for New York values and I am proud to endorse her for U.S. Senate.’

Also present at the Sunday dinner was Harold Ford, the former Tennessee congressman who is considering a run against Gillibrand.

2. According to the e-mail I received from her recently, she has just about everybody's endorsement.
I'm proud of her, too. She's not just my senator, but was also my congresswoman, here in NY-20. :toast:

12. Hey neighbor (NY-18)
I think she's done a terrific job and will do anything I can to make sure Harold Ford gets nowhere with his desire to represent New York.

3. Where are you now, all you DUers who insisted a primary battle? Come on...
crawl out of your holes and explain why my most excellent Senator should do battle with the pantload Ford.

4. Gilibrand - defended big tabbaco, DLC right-wing DINO
Can we get a real democrat at the state level please?

Tasini deserves a good look.

6. What are you talking about!? She's supporting PO through reconciliation.
And over the summer has endorsed and is pushing legislation to repeal DADT and DOMA...so she's not a complete DINO here---would you prefer that MSNBC contributor taking her place, because that's who's around.

10. she's running state-wide in a liberal state as opposed to district-wide in a conservative district

Where one runs can have a liberating effect.

13. Wow that's so courageous of her, supporting the PO to get elected
Is that to get us to ignore this :

While a corporate lawyer Gillibrand defended tobacco giant Philip Morris, including their attempts to conceal health information collected by their lab. In her most recent campaign, she accepted more than $18,000 in donations from tobacco companies and their executives, including Philip Morris. She is awash in corporate money--$1.2 million just from Wall Street/real estate.

Corporate SELL OUT. She'll move just left enough to get voted in and then move back to the right where her paymasters want her.

14. You can make anyone look appealing next to X
This is the reason that Ford is the race to get people to close ranks around Gilibrand. The only difference between Gilibrand and Ford is that Ford is a clown. Gilibrand is no liberal, no Progressive. She's a blue dog Democrat and she'll be a Nelson, Lieberman, Bayh as soon as she gets elected.

I'm voting for Tasini.

11. Al Gore supports Medicare for All. Gilibrand does not.
The PO is a joke, a set up for failure.

I live in NY and I'm not voting for another DLC Blue Dog who will vote with Republicans to water down legislation.

18. yeah she does. And you didn't include that in your critique in post #4 that I responded to.
Edited on Wed Feb-17-10 04:37 PM by wyldwolf
... you know, when you said she defended Big Tobaccco (ALGORE) DLC (ALGORE)?

"As I've written over at DailyKos and as I told Howard Dean last week, I believe that a robust not-for-profit public option must be a part of the health care reform package Congress passes this year. I feel that opening up a Medicare For All type system to everyone would lower costs and increase efficiency by injecting some much needed competition into the market."

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand - July 23, 2009

And she just signed a letter expressing her support for the public option.

16. Vaberella - are you a NY'er, too!
Gillibrand has turned out to be a very, very pleasant surprise. I didn't know anything about her when she was appointed, but she hasn't put a foot wrong that I can see. She's turned out to be much more liberal than the scuttlebutt at the time gave her credit for.
