The Alabama Farmers Federation's endorsement of two Democrats in key Alabama congressional districts appears to be a setback to Republicans targeting the seats.
The association, a generally conservative group known as ALFA, gave its nod to Congressman Bobby Bright in Alabama's 2nd District and Steve Raby in the 5th District, showing the two have convinced some farmers of their conservative credentials despite claims to the contrary by the GOP.
Political experts said that is important to both, but that winning support from the aerospace industry also will be important for Raby.
Alabama Republican Party chairman Mike Hubbard said Bright and Raby are enabling the Democratic Party to stay in power in Washington and shouldn't be the choice of the farm-and-insurance group.
