Knoxville mayor wins TN GOP gubernatorial primary

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam has won Tennessee's Republican gubernatorial nomination after a contentious — and expensive — 19-month campaign.

Haslam, the dominant fundraiser of the race, triumphed Thursday over U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp and state Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey.

With 2 percent of precincts reporting, Haslam had 115,705 votes, or 52 percent, to Wamp's 59,922 votes, or 27 percent. Ramsey had 43,308 votes, or 20 percent.

Haslam stressed his executive experience, both as mayor and previously as president of the family founded Pilot Corp. truck stop chains, one of the country's largest privately owned companies.

Haslam will face Democrat Mike McWherter, son of former Gov. Ned McWherter, in the general election. Democratic Gov. Phil

Or 2,928 people with a twisted sense of humor.

... yep, was running for BOTH Governor AND Congress at the SAME time.

He's not taking his defeat too hard though, vowing to run for President next. lol

8. Wamp & Corker are NOT the best that the town I grew up in has to offer.
Hard for me to believe we grew up at the same time, in the same town, when I hear them. What embarrassments!

Glad Ole' Zach got beat, but the GOP didn't expect him to beat Haslam or Ramsey. My guess is this was an exercise to gain state-wide name recognition so he can run for Lamar Alexander's US Senate seat next time around if Lamar decides to cash it in.

9. Congratulations. I live in TN to and I voted for Mickey Mouse instead of the republican or
the conservative democrat in my district and I made sure I called his office and let him know my name and why I voted for Mickey. I will only vote for a democrat, period. We don't have much to pick from. Our state has become home of the nutjobs. I hope people will wise up.

15. I INTENDED to vote for Haslam....
... and for Fleishmann for Congress. (gotta love those open primaries!)

I wanted to do my part to make sure Wamp lost (the Dem Gov. primary only had once candidate) .... wanted to vote for Fleishmann because his opponent Robin Smith is a Club For Growth EVIL woman.

But as I approached the polling place, HUGE lightening storm came up.

God ..... or Ted Kennedy ...... or Al Gore Sr or SOMEONE didn't want me to vote Republican. lol

16. Congrats Clio! I thought this was pretty bizarre but telling of those involved:
Between Zach Wamp's secessionism, Ron Ramsey's cult of Islam and Basil Marceaux dot com, the governor's race couldn't get much weirder

"I know these campaigns are kind of goofy," Zach Wamp said, in probably the biggest understatement of the Tennessee governor's race.

Wamp was offering his closing statement in a debate before the Tennessee Education Association earlier this summer. "We think so too," he continued. "This is the silly season. From here on, people say things they don't even believe about each other, and then one person wins."

It was nice of Wamp to warn us. But how could anyone predict it would get this goofy? This campaign seems ripped straight from the pages of the Weekly World News. Before mercifully ending this week, it made Tennessee a national laughingstock.

Ron Ramsey grabbed headlines by saying freedom of religion doesn't necessarily apply to Islam because that actually might be a cult. Wamp, meanwhile, was creating his own furor by suggesting states might secede from the union if voters can't rein in that socialist federal government at the ballot box.
