Michelle Obama Portrait Debuts at Smithsonian

http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory?id=11452232

Move over Martha Washington. Martha Stewart and Michelle Obama are getting space in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington for the first time.

A new exhibit, "Americans Now," opened Friday, featuring famous names from science, business, government and the arts.

President Barack Obama and the first lady are among those portrayed. It's the first time Michelle Obama's individual portrait has been shown at the gallery.

(snip)
The portraits are on view through July 2011.

This undated handout image provided by the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery shows a screenprint of first lady Michelle Obama by Mickalene Thomas. Move over Martha Washington. Martha Stewart is taking her place in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington. The museum's new exhibit, "Americans Now," opened Friday, featuring some famous names from science, business, government, entertainment and the arts. 1. Michelle's picture looks wonderful.
Why did they add Martha Stewart, she is a celebrity not the first lady.

4. The National portrait Gallery has a lot more than heads of state, etc.
I saw the golden head of Elvis las time I was there!

And a few lovely Avedon photos.

6. I like it. But it screams 1988 to me.
Maybe it's the light pastel blue for the background.

Still pretty nifty.

8. Nice. Reminds me of the "hope" portraits of Obama from the campaign.
Were the artists going for a thematic link there?

Otherwise, very post modern and cool.

9. If someone hadn't told me
I would have never guessed it was Michelle. Nice portrait but it doesn't look like her, imo.
