Obama Will Triumph — So Will America
By Frank Schaeffer

Before he’d served even one year President Obama lost the support of the easily distracted left and engendered the white hot rage of the hate-filled right. But some of us, from all walks of life and ideological backgrounds -- including this white, straight, 57-year-old, former religious right wing agitator, now progressive writer and (given my background as the son of a famous evangelical leader) this unlikely Obama supporter -- are sticking with our President. Why?-- because he is succeeding.

............................

Obama’s steady supporters will be proved right. Obama’s critics will be remembered as easily panicked and prematurely discouraged at best and shriveled hate mongers at worst.

.......................

The Future Looks Good

After Obama has served two full terms, (and he will), after his wisdom in moving deliberately and cautiously with great subtlety on all fronts -- with a canny and calculating eye to the possible succeeds, (it will), after the economy is booming and new industries are burgeoning, (they will be), after the doomsayers are all proved not just wrong but silly: let the record show that not all Americans were panicked into thinking the sky was falling.

Just because we didn’t get everything we wanted in the first short and fraught year Obama was in office not all of us gave up. Some of us stayed the course. And we will be proved right.

He seems to understand the immense power they exercise in our society, economy and government. We could call them 'dark forces'.

when he points out their crazy-assed BS.

Here he is on Rachel's show talking about that crazy Psalm 109:8. RW chatter:

the "stupid" is for suggesting that if i don't believe this guy i must be incapable of recognizing or learning from mistakes.

i also have the ability to learn from the mistakes of others, something you might try working on.

64. I tend not to trust him
He may understand the mindset of the RW but his understanding of the Left is spotty at best. "Easily panicked" my ass. The Left has been the one screaming for Obama to take real strides for change, not the baby steps he's been taking.
Plus it seems he can't string two sentences together without plugging his book. Typical televangelist behavior. Gotta sell that book!!!
Something is not passing the smell test with him. I hope I'm wrong about him.

23. Not always
For instance, he got his posterior handed to him the first time he ran for public office. But he does learn from his mistakes and adjust his behavior when it isn't working. He's exhibited several examples of doing this since he first became nationally visible in the primary race. I think he is reacting a bit more slowly than he did before assuming office, probably because of the gravity of all the situations he is facing, but I do think he is being as flexible as he dares and that he's keeping an open mind as he applies that formidable intelligence of his to doing the best job he can. Which, given the situation, is probably going to be a better job than just about anybody else would be doing.

You don't pay off a maxed out credit card with minimum payments.

Bush has put this country in a deep hole and the small steps Obama has taken are nice but they are just that, too small. We need huge steps to be taken now and Obama is too risk-averse to take the bold steps needed to get us moving in the right direction. He wasted his first year by trying to be "bipartisan" and "reaching across the aisle". The Left knew that was a fool's errand but Obama and Rahm and Geithner and Summers were too busy cuddling with Goldman-Sachs and spooning with United Health to listen to us dirty fucking hippies and enact some real change and not just chump change.

FDR he ain't.

74. FDR would not have survived one term in todays political climate...
FDR did not have to go up against Rupert Murdoch's media empire & a MSM media that is more interested in fights than facts, FDR did not have to deal with filibuster after filibuster, FDR did not have to fight against lobbyist that hold the power lobbyist today hold and most of all FDR had the votes in Congress because there were no filibusters for every single thing he tried!

FDR HAD IT EASY!!! REALLY REALLY EASY! ...And still many on the Left like today did nothing but criticize FDR for not living up to his promises much like today's criticism of Obama...To many people thought FDR & think Obama should have been able to just walk into office & make everything better instanly!

Now you can ignore all of this & continue to bash Obama and that is every bit your right...However, you are not dumb, you know the differences and to compare the two in the way you did is ABSURD.

I want everything you do but we did not get into this mess in 18 months & we damn sure are not going to get out of it 18 months under ANY President. To even think that is ABSURD!

President Obama had two choice take an ideological stand & pass nothing or begin to small steps that can be built upon with time.

In case you are interested...

fully investigate and prosecute the crimes of the last 10 years including but not limited to election theft, treason, and war crimes. We cannot heal this country or even get the attention of the duped without dealing with the last 10 years. There is more to be said but that was the short version. Please don’t jump all over me for this post… after all, I did start it with “In my humble opinion.” Thanks.

52. Voting for the winner...
"...are sticking with our President. Why?-- because he is succeeding."

Not for an ideal, or for doing thrings the right way, or to halt the suffering of others, or to better the place within which we live. Vote for him, because he is a winner? ON that principle? That is the major factor by which we must support the president?

It's been through this one factor, voting for the winner, that many people have achieved public office who have not deserved it. Because we get all emberessed when we think we might be voting for a "loser". We project our egos into the candidate. If the candidate loses, then we feel like we lost. We don't want to lose!

And so the terrible things that happen continue.

56. Problem with all of the criticism of the left that supported Obama
The problem with all of this criticism of the left by Obama supporters is that is merely exasperates the left and further alienates it. That's not the way to win elections.

Ah, but it seems Obama really wants to please the Republicans and doesn't care about the left that helped him get into office. Obama is losing his base.

58. Preaching to the choir
At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious, the people Schaeffer needs to convince are not here at DU. It's the moderates and independents who are getting their cues from the increasingly Foxified media. I'm not talking about actual Fox News viewers, who will never vote for Obama, but those poor deluded souls who believe that CNN represents a "mainstream alternative" to Fox.

71. Hillary - 2012
Edited on Mon Aug-23-10 10:32 PM by golfguru
1992-2000 were the best years for me.
Plenty of jobs!
Wonderful stock market!!
NO WARS!!!

Go Hillary!!!!

Painful truth is, since Obama was elected president,

Jobs are more scarce! More people signing up for unemployment benefits!!
Stock market has declined since March!!
50,000+ soldiers still in Iraq with no firm date of withdrawal!
Escalating war in Afghanistan which is a no-win war!! Now longer than Viet-Nam!!!
Zero cost controls in HRC bill, health related costs
going up faster for working people.

Go Hillary in 2012!
