President Obama approval rating rising-up 5 points in 2 days-Mosque gate over?
Edited on Sun Aug-22-10 12:19 PM by Politics_Guy25
The President is resillient if nothing else. There is still a strong resovoir of good will towards him and he never seems to plummet in the polls for too long.

Check this out:
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/obama_administration/daily_presidential_tracking_poll

I know it's Ramussen but still they always have him lower than everyone else.

Overall, 48% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president's performance. Fifty-one percent (51%) disapprove.

Was at just 43% on Friday. I thought Mosque-gate was going to crater him into the 20s and guarantee the GOP a 20 seat senate pickup and a 120 seat house pickup?

I knew ending the Iraq war would send his numbers soaring a little.

Now if the economy shows the slightest breath of true life, it's game over in 2012.

Freak-show circuses like the community center/Mosque do not matter in the end. In the end it's jobs, jobs, jobs and ending needless wars that will count.

Poor media. Their takedown attempt failed YET again for the 1,000,000th time. They need to go to hell and give it up.

2. Who knows
He is steady, consistent and rational, qualities that most people would like to see in themselves. They get mad at him, but they don't feel bad coming back to him.

Even if the RepubliCorporate media wants to keep flinging the phony RepubliPoo at President Obama, citizens recognize the RepubliMedia has jumped the Poo Shark.

6. That's kinda the point of the OP
If Assmussen shows an approval hovering near the 50% mark, then it stands to reason that a less-biased sampling would reveal even higher ratings.

5. You may be right! Gallup Daily Tracking is showing the same kind of movement --
According to RealClearPolitics, today's Gallup numbers are 44% approve, 49% disapprove -- far better than the 41% approve, 52% disapprove in the middle of the past week.

At the same time, Mosque-gate will continue to bubble up until, in my opinion, another site is found for the Mosque. Here's two articles from the NY Daily News, dated Friday, 8/20/10 -- (NOT the NY Post - which is the right-wing tabloid here: Daily News tends to be moderate Dem in outlook)

Miss USA Rima Fakih, first Muslim winner, speaks out against mosque near Ground Zero

They won't build it! Hardhats vow not to work on controversial mosque near Ground Zero

7. Perspective...
Which other national political figure or governmental body can boast a 48% approval rating right now? Congress? Palin? Mittens? Gingritch?

9. Yeah a satisfactory solution to the community center is required for sure
Or it could become a big problem long term and not just a blip. I think NY will straighten it out and reach a deal that all sides are pleased with.

And yep my point is if he's this high in Ramussen, he's doing fine elswhere. 49 approval is just fine really and way higher than Reagan's at this point.

11. LOL - no problem. Thanks for the thread. Yes, 49% is really pretty good at this point.
I try to be fair: I had a thread last week pointing out Obama's temporary cratering over Mosque-gate. It's only right that you now give us one poiting out that he's back up!

And no, she won't run in 2012 -- for President, anyway. I can totally see Obama picking her as his second-term VP however. :)

14. Thanks for pointing that out... Very impressive!
It's interesting, if you read the fine print, her higher ratings are due to stronger support from republicans.... Who ever thought a Clinton would rate high marks from republicans? I wonder how long that would last if she were given the VP nod?

Cheers!

25. Yeah, when Hillary has the total responsibility of Afghanistan, the economy, etc.
then tell me what her approval rating is. SOS is not the President. And by the way, I happen to like Hillary and like the job she is doing as SOS.

17. He needs to get better at messaging and leadership.
Even with the job situation as it is, I think Obama has not used the bully pulpit as well as he could to force the Republican's hands on legislation that would improve the economic situation.

I like Obama but I have been disappointed that he has not been as effective as he could have at making Republicans pay for their obstructionism and for their asinine "cut taxes at all cost" philosophy that got us into this mess in the first place.

If Obama stood up and forcefully told the American people that the biggest part of the reason we are in this mess is because of the cost of the war on terror and that the Republican's, although they spared no approval of cost for it, have refused to pay for it. They are fine with American servicemen paying for it with their limbs and life, but reaching into their pockets to put a few extra bucks toward it is just a bridge too far for them. How dare they vote for and encourage our youth to sacrifice and fight for this country while they refuse to do even sacrifice an extra 3 pennies on the dollar to pay for it.

I think a lot of people were hoping for him to be better at using the bully pulpit. He seems to be starting to come around, but he needs to get more forceful in shaming Republicans for their failure to pay for the defense of this country. Even with the employee situation not improving as quickly as it needs to, I think standing on these principals would still keep him above 50%, maybe even higher. And give the legislators some political cover, including moderate Republicans. He has done little to do that though.

This is why we use surveys and statistics instead of "the people I know"

16. People eventually respond when they see strong principled stands
Edited on Sun Aug-22-10 02:56 PM by Go2Peace
The President should take more of these kinds of stands.

Our population is emotional, afraid, and not completely rational right now. Taking a strong stand initially shocks the population because conflicts with the constant propaganda, but the effect is that if you continue to stand strong and reassert people will come around. They respond to leadership, and especially once they realize that the stand is correct.

I would like to see more of these kinds of stands. That is the way we will defeat *and* LEAD, our people out of this intellectual morass we are in.

If we ever get to a booming economy, watch out. President Obama and the dems will be an unstoppable political force the likes which this nation has never seen with such an incredibly charismatic and likeable guy at the helm.
