The GOP is SCREWED (and they know it!)

The GOP is SCREWED (and they know it!)

by MinistryOfTruth

I write today primarily to direct your attention to this diary by srkp23. Please go recommend it because it is full of WIN!

Read it and laugh, because the writing is on the wall.

Once you've read and recommended the awesomeness that is Kossack srkp23's diary, come back here below the fold. I have my own thoughts . . .

Momentum is ours, and the GOP is SCREWED in more ways than one, and they know it.

Despite all the screaming YOU LIE, SOCIALIST, HITLER, RACIST WHO HATES WHITE PEOPLE and so on, President Obama enjoys a good popularity rating. (45-48) Their screeching IS NOT WORKING. The GOP has LOST it's moderate base. GONE. All that is left is the screeching lowest common denominator of leftover Bush voters and Beck and Palin fans. They are fired up, and have been since inauguration day. But they aren't enough to win, frankly, and the GOP strategists have to know this, because people in their tent are getting a little scared.

If Republicans fail to pick up a majority in either house of Congress they will be COMPLETELY demoralized, and it will be totally awesome, and I'm bringing beer. And it is happening, races are tightening that Republicans NEED to win if they are to claim a House majority. The math is against them too. If Dems pick up 4 or 5 seats (DE-AL, IL-10, and HI-01 look like they can be picked up, and we are likely to win at least 1 or 2 other House seats we didn't expect.) the GOP needs to pick up 39 House seats + the 4 or so the Dems win. I don't see that happening.

1. They are past the apogee of the demographic curve.
All this Teabagger noise is not the resurgence of the far-right, it is their death rattle.

You cannot change the direction in which this country is heading, it is inexorably becoming more diverse, more progressive in thought, more tolerant as the Old Guard of white privilege ages and dies.

11. Wow, Your first sentence!
It is a thing of beauty.

Your second sentence: The second best sentence in your terrific post.

Your thinking reminds me of Phillip Slater's wonderful (and under-read) book "The Chrysalis Effect: The Metamorphosis of Global Culture". Some quotes below:

"Incivility and chaos arise when an old system is breaking down and a new one hasn't yet fully taken hold. Today we're in that very spot, undergoing a transition between two global cultural systems with opposing values and assumptions: one of them thousands of years old and dying, but still tenacious, exhausting itself in ever more violent resurgences; the other in it's youth, but growing stronger everyday."

"The purest forms of a social system always appear as it decays. Often, when a system is ailing, its believers try to strip away its contradictions, leaving a system that is more pure, more rigid, and hence more fragile."

The Old Guard ain't aging and dying fast enough for me!

These people want us to relive the 60s and 70s AGAIN! I'm almost 50......I've got too much left to accomplish with this life - I don't have time to relive the civil rights movement again.

20. Huge WWII/boomer die-off has started already.
I know it's hard to have patience, but the US is going to be a totally different country in a mere decade (heck, it's already started, we already got a president who was unelectable 20-30 years ago). The people who grew up thinking that segregation was "normal" are fading away, as are those who lived in a world before birth control, in a world when it was somehow okay to arrest people for their sex lives, a world where we had to live in fear of "communists", etc.

I'm almost 40, so I'm about ten years behind you, but I can see it happening every day.

24. As a daughter of the American South, I see that they are playing the Southern Strategy
but this time, in its more subtle form.

They turn every government-backed policy into an "us versus them" one. Everything is welfare. Health care reform is "welfare." Unemployment insurance is "welfare." Medicare is "welfare." Teachers' pensions amounts to "welfare." Hell, Social Security will be framed as "welfare." You just wait and see. They want to get in power for one thing and one thing, only: to steal from Social Security...AGAIN!!!!

42. Less and Less People Have A Stake in the Economy
Thus, their "trust" and "love" of private corporations is also fading. Old Boomers had a great run. All they had to do was go to any college and get a degree. The jobs were waiting for them. Today, young people start off their adult lives deep in a debt hole or working subpar service sector jobs.

Think of a computer science grad in 1975 and compare that same grad to computer science grad in 2010. Two completely different worlds. That 2010 grad is going to struggle to find work and faces stiff competition from India.

The longer high unemployment and underemployment goes on, the more likely that the people will demand fundamental changes in our politics and our economy.

We're looking at a new wave of true progressive politics at the end of this decade.

6. We've seen this sitcom before. The MSM is laying the groundwork
for voter fraud that could win for the Rs ("just like we predicted, the Rs won, even though it was closer than we thought"), OR - more likely - the Norm Coleman gambit ("the MSM called me the winner, and that D candidate saying 'count the votes' is just a case of sour grapes. It will take a court order for me to give up my seat in Congress.").

At this point, the end game is to keep the votes within a margin of error so they can do their usual and pull things over to the R column.

43. Completely depends on demographic and popularity of the politician.
The smart voting public do know that our elected officials are put in office to work for US, and not to line their own pockets. If a Member of Congress listens to, and responds to the needs of his or her constituents and engages with them on a wide level, then that Member of Congress is usually "safe".

Poll: Anger Unlikely to Be Deciding Factor in Midterms

The corporate media have failed in their missions to put Sarah Palin and the Teabaggers into the mainstream, and to hand the GOP an pre-emptive midterm election victory. The turnout at the 10/2 rally certainly doesn't help them. So let the backpedaling begin!

19. Looking out a bit futher, the GOP knows that their game is done, long terrm...
Since the raygun "revolution" they have been pushing hard to get more young people into the fold. It worked for a while, but they know their base is diminishing, both from age and the natural evolution of society to become more progressive. The conservative think tanks know this and have been trying mightily through the take over of mass media and fear to reverse this trend, but hey will ultimately lose.

31. Pollution Experience
In 1960's, I was golfing in the morning in Riverside, Californina
We had just finished nine holes and horns and sirens starting blaring.
My pal of Riverside said we had to get off the golf course due to smog being so bad.
I had wondered why my eyes had burned all morning.
He said it looks cloudy but above you is a bright sunny day.
That cloud is SMOG.

On Sunday, the plane took off West and turned to head East.
The pilot announced if you want to see smog look out left side.

No kidding. It looked like a 100 ft high blanket of rust insulation material
It went as far as we could see down the valley.

The Santa Ana winds came in off the ocean in late afternoon and blew it into the desert.
Then, next morning it repeated the scene.

I flew out of Greensboro nc each monday morning in a private plane and always saw blue haze over the city. Smog (tar heel blue--pretty))

Few years ago in Denver it was same scene. EPA threatened to cut funds if no progress was made.

Cut & Trade. Familiar? Acid Rain where forth art thou.

Cut and Trade policies cut it.

Cut and Trade worked in England. Why not here.

England not controlled by WSA. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ GOD $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Can they not even motive a measly 3% increase from billionaires?....they have nothing...except some weird "Magic Box" that if they are in power, they will spend 2 years investigating PO and Dem's...once again, tying up Congress while they watch the country swirl down the toilet.
