Barack Obama appreciation thread!
I don't always agree with Obama. Sometimes I'm disappointed. But overall, I'm still glad he's in office and I appreciate the good job he's doing.
So this is my Obama appreciation thread!

1. Glad to K & R
It's a great relief to know that our voices are heard and that, at least some of the time, it makes a difference. Obama did the right thing today. Thank you, Mr. President!

he signed two intelligence bills that improve oversight!

More steps in the right direction -- and the poor guy has a long journey with the mess he was handed.

He's done a LOT of things that deserve appreciation and gratitude, we just don't hear about a lot of them. :(

The thing went through on unanimous consent, which means everybody - Franken, Sanders, everybody, was under the impression it was a noncontroversial bill.

President Obama caught it.

It's exactly what I would expect her to be looking out for. And, as a Presidential Advisor, she'd certainly be available to help him with advice and/or analysis.

Good for Obama! That's the president I voted for.

126. that's what's so frustrating...
that we don't hear about 89% of them!!! Fucking media.

If we HAD been well informed by our so-called independent press, I'm sure the decisions we ARE unhappy with would have gone much differently. Without public awareness (and hence, support), it's been much harder to stand against the Axis of Greed and get anything meaningful passed.

Anyway, very glad to see him stand OUR ground!! YEAH!!!!

173. Hating Obama?
You've heard of the old expression "if you go looking for something, you'll likely find it, even if it isn't there"? All I was saying was that it was a pretty hollow statement to compare someone to Bush. Pick the person that came in last in the democratic primary, they'd be better than Bush.

66. Um...What?...
...How was that crapping on good news?

That is stating a fact; Bush, one of the worst presidents of all time, if not the worst (IMO, Ronald Wilson Reagan was by far the worst, I don't even think Bush would have been possible if it wasn't for him) shouldn't even be a standard of comparison, simply because it would be like saying President Obama is better than Hitler/Dog Shit/A Potted Plant/(Insert Clearly Inferior Opposition Here).

Of course he is, he's Barack Obama, he's Hope/Change/Yes We Can/Inspiration on Near-Biblical Proportions all rolled into one. He's the most inspiring President I've encountered (though I must admit, I really only knew Bush Senior, Clinton, and of course, Dubbya).

I really don't think the poster was trying to be divisive in this thread.

And before you go calling me a hater, YES, I voted for Obama, and YES, on the whole, I'm pretty damn pleased with the job he's done.

Thought I'd show you my "loyalty papers" before being called a hater or something along those lines for even questioning such snark from you.

75. Thanks For The Warm Welcome!
I can understand how one can be frustrated with a lot of the dismay that's seen around DU - however, if we want to come together to fight the true, Number One Threat To America, (Republican Brand Fascism) snarky remarks, from either side, are not constructive to that cause.

It seems at times that with all of the paranoia about Republican trolls and consistent divisive remarks/personal attacks that we forget that we all share one common, ever-lasting hatred -

- A hatred for Big Business consistently taking a massive dump on the rest of us who don't happen to be part of that upper one-percent of rich, white, out-of-touch elitist pricks that see the rest of America, and the American people by extension, as nothing more than a means to an end of accumulating more wealth and more power.

No matter how frustrated we are with the current state of affairs, we cannot let our guard down, even for a moment, concerning those fascist fuckers.

183. So, An Eye For An Eye?
Because that poster is negative, that gives you the right to be negative?

Just because you perceive that poster's comments as negative, does not necessarily make them that way.

Besides, attacking perceived snark with more snark will not help you get across your view point. You catch more flies with honey. I believe the vast majority of posters on DU want the best for America, and we want to see President Obama succeed.

If you sincerely believe a poster to be a Republican Troll, feel them out. Personally, I'm a strong believer in giving your opponent enough rope to hang themselves.

And in the case of Republicans, they will hang themselves every time. Seems to be instinctive on their part...

His heart is in the right place; he really PO'd us DUers with his incessant calls for bipartisanship with the thugs on the other side, instead of standing up for us like an FDR - but all in all, I give him a B. 62. A list of things that Obama has done RIGHT so far
He signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, extending the statute of limitations for filing a sexual discrimination lawsuit against an employer.

He overturned the Reagan-era "Mexico City Policy" that denies funding to international family planning groups that offer abortion services.

He endorsed the United Nations declaration on gay rights and lifted the ban on HIV+ immigrants.

He ordered the military to allow women in uniform access to the "morning-after" pill.

He has begun reversing the Bush administation policy against stem-cell research.

He extended partnership benefits to Federal employees in same-sex relationships.

He gave transgendered Federal employees protection against discrimination.

He allowed states to enact higher carbon standards that exceed those of the Federal government.

He directed the EPA to classify excessive carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as a health hazard.

He cancelled the obsolete F-22 fighter project.

He gave immigrants the right to legal counsel in hearings.

He shut down the T. Don Hutto Detention Center, a private prison in Texas designed to house immigrant families, including small children.

He negotiated a new START treaty with Russia.

He expanded children's access to health care. (The overall bill is a travesty, but this portion was a long time coming.)

He signed the Tribal Law and Order Act, which is designed to combat substance abuse and domestic violence on reservations.

All of these accomplishments are indeed commendable, and President Obama deserves our thanks for all of these - but there is still a world of work to be done on jobs, healthcare reform, the environment, etc. He's got two years left to get these right, and hopefully we can give him four more years to keep it up.

...kick and recommend.

I may not be pleased with all of his decisions, particularly with education, but I still firmly believe he's the best our country has to offer.

I just hope he keeps on pushing forward, because it's clearly what the American people want, it's what we need, it's what we're ready for, despite whatever the MSM wants us to believe about Americans.

On the whole, we are a very progressive people. For some reason, the most ignorant of us seem to get the most coverage in the MSM...wonder why that is...

Couldn't be that they're trying to SELL US a narrative? The MSM? Naaah, never...

I know we have trolls -- so yes they would
Sometimes people hit unrec by accident -- I have and I always post an apology. I wish there was a way we could undo it
I know there are some unhappy people here. But, even when I'm unhappy I just stay away from appreciation threads about people I'm unhappy with. I figure, "Why piss on their parade."

Using the criterion above, I guess 23 shouldn't be a surprise. Hell, we had a guy here about a week ago opposing raises in the minimum wage and their source to support their claim came from a woman who is with freedomworks

175. Not necessarily.
Most Democrats elected from rural areas show some support for gun ownership. Of course, it becomes a problem with being for gun control becomes a litmus test for major candidates. It means rural Democrats don't get elected for statewide races and we lose votes in rural areas. Party leaders in the 90's decided to ignore rural voters while they chased soccer moms and rural Democrats are still suffering from that decision.

144. Obama is OK
He is not perfect. But, I think that he is an intelligent, feet firmly on the ground person. He is not everything though. He does not do anger or outrage very well; he does not seem to have much of either. he does not play political hardball, like LBJ.he has a problem with Congress and the Democratic caucus there. That group did not do very well.

The economy is a mess. It will have to fix itself, as the orthodox economists have no solutions. The heterodox economists who do have workable solutions are ignored.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give Obama a 7.

163. While i am glad obama has recently........
done a few things that are what i consider common sense and hope he continues, I will not join the "obama rocks" group and act like he is the new FDR.

Until every person has comprehensive access to healthcare (without worrying about being broke from co-pays, premiums, etc.etc.etc.)

The ability and right to get a job that they can live off of.

He secures our borders and enacts a plan to go after employers of illegal aliens and have those illegals removed from those jobs and deported so americans can have access to the jobs. (and anyone who is thinking "illegals do jobs that americans won't" is confused. Americans wont do those jobs because those employers won't pay a fair wage (yaaaay capitalism) and are exploiting illegals.

And then abruptly apologizes for making deals with corporate interests and playing the same "GAME" he promised to change repeatedly.

In other words, just do what he said he was going to do.

It seams expecting this now makes you a "troll" or "hater" now.

oh how the spectrum has shifted right and how easy it is for obama to please some with crumbs.

178. Welcome to DU
Something on the immigration issue you raised...

http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display/web/2010/09/27/pm-silent-raids-focus-on-employers-not-workers/

'Silent raids' focus on employers, not workers

Since the Obama Administration took office, it has changed the way the government goes looking for illegal immigrants on the job, too. Instead of trying to track down the workers themselves, the feds go after companies now. The official line from Washington is that that reduces the supply of jobs that will attract undocumented workers to begin with.

184. To clarify

The President has drastically changed ICE policy on investigating illegal aliens.

ICE no longer targets ANY undocumented workers.

ICE is exclusively involved in tracking down criminal and dangerous illegal aliens. They are going through every jail and prison trying to find convicted criminals that can be deported. They are also tracking down aliens that are suspected of having gang ties and if there is not enough evidence for criminal prosecution but the illegal alien has no visible means of support but is obviously making money illegally they will deport them.

ICE only investigates business owners who are known to be especially recruiting undocumented workers and those that are guilty of other employment related abuses (like not paying overtime or employing children, etc.)

191. "It seams expecting this now makes you a "troll" or "hater" now."
The word is spelled "s-e-e-m-s". I tell you this because we've had "troll" troubles here for quite some time, and they are usually grammatically challenged, and are terrible spellers. They tend to stick out like sore thumbs due to their inability to spell, and heaping dollops of anti immigrant rhetoric. :hi: Remember this guy?

Just sayin'......

171. we need to have his back people
the bad guys are still the same people. if he hasn't lived up to your expectations (so far! 2yrs to undo 30 yrs of Reaganism and decades of Faux News propaganda??? get real!), bottom line, its their fault, not his. even if he is at fault in some way or other.

in other words, we need to have his back. or kick his backside if need be, but tearing down our own leaders, (whoever they may be) with hyperbolic accusations of of "betrayal" and "sellout", and failing to vote, and get out the vote, serves us not at all.

we know who the enemy is. and its not Barack Obama or even the Democrats.

so until we have a 3rd party with majority numbers, pulling the D lever is all we got.

and keeping the pressure on once they're elected to pursue a progressive agenda, and to not cave in, also includes letting them know we'll back them up when they face incredible pressure (and threats) from the powers that be.
