Crist, Rubio, And Meek
If Crist had a chance of defeating Rubio it might have made sense to cast a "strategic" vote for him. However that does not seem the case. The cake is baked and barring a seismic shift in the race Rubio is going to win. It doesn't make sense to alienate a large part of the Democratic base on a lost cause.

Now that we got that out of the way, Marco Rubio is a GOP wet dream. He touts conservative platitudes, is young, handsome, has a beautiful wife and children. And did I mention he's a member of the nation's fastest growing minority without whose votes Democrats can not win. He will certainly parlay his Senate Seat into something larger. That's why Jeb Bush groomed him for this day.

Democrats will rue the day they didn't stop him in this election just as we rue the day we didn't stop George W. Bush in his 1994 gubernatorial race against Ann Richards.

12. Unfortunately, that won't happen. Meek will still siphon off votes fr Crist...
or vice versa, however you want to look at it.

But Rubio has, and has had for some time, a strong, decisive lead.

Barring some huge Rubio scandal, Rubio will win easily. That's just the reality.

That is probably why the Dems couldn't get a strong candidate to run (a candidate named "Meek," for a party that has a problem with being considered too "meek"?).

I thought Crist had a good chance of winning, but that's not happening.

2. We could stop Rubio if we all voted for our Democratic nominee Kendrick Meek.
Because the cake is baked--Crist cannot beat the loathsome Jeb Bush protegee, Marco Rubio--I intend to do just that.

If enough of us Democrats come home, Meek could conceivably win.

3. Florida Has Elected Just Three Democrats To Higher Office Since 1980
When Hugh Rodham ran in a similar political environment he lost by more than thirty points.

5. And he ran no ads
Meek is no Hugh Rodham. I'm not sure why you keep bringing that up. Martinez won by the slimmest of margins 6 years ago. Betty Castor should have won that race - Jeb stole that one, too.

What about Alex Sink - she won statewide office 4 years ago.
What about Bob Butterworth - he won statewide office 8 years ago.

Not everything is so black and white here in Florida. So to say that Democrats can't win, it's just plain wrong.

6. Can You Name Four Democrats Who Have Been Elected Governor Or Senator In The Last Thirty Years?
Edited on Fri Oct-08-10 02:36 PM by DemocratSinceBirth
I checked my post. I did say "higher" office.

Betty Castor was a much stronger candidate and 04 was a much better political environment for Democrats.

Mark my words... Rubio will win and he will win big and he will parlay his Senate seat to national prominence where he will poach Latino votes without which Democrats can not win.

P.S. I bring up Hugh Rodham because the political environment in 1994 was as toxic for Democrats as it is now.

8. Unfortuantley for an African American Progressive from South Florida running for state wide office
a lot of things are "black and white." Outside of some urban areas, Meek is not going to garner a lot of support in the I-4 corridor or above because of his color, even among some democrats. The democrats are Allen Boyd-type democrats and they are more conservative than progressive.

Add to the fact that, as mentioned earlier, Florida has only elected two democratic Senators over the last twenty years and they were/are white, blue dog democrats.

I have not seen any model that shows Meek could win this one even if Crist dropped out.

The important thing to watch here is what % of the Hispanic goes for Rubio.

11. and crist can't do it w/o the black vote
who will stay home because of the paternalistic attitude of progressives. Oh well, we came this close to having a female, democratic governor. I'm sure Mrs. Sinks is going to be so grateful.

10. Rubio 50%, Crist 25%, Meek 19% in todays (R)assmussen poll

Crist is toast. Might as well vote for Meek which will help increase
his stature for next election.

13. If both Crist and Meek say in the race, Rubio wins...
There really is no way around it. There is no solution to this either. There is a case for either one dropping out, but neither is likely to do so.

Best strategy is probably to just encourage high turn out so we have a shot at winning the other races.

Barring something amazing happening, Rubio will be the next Senator from Florida.

Crist is the spoiler here by throwing his hat in the ring and playing to his ego. I swear this place has turned upside down. All I know is that Republican supporters used to not be allowed here.
