Incumbent Democratic Congressman Dennis Cardoza has a wide lead over Republican challenger Mike Berryhill, polls say.
An article in today’s Roll Call reports an internal poll has Cardoza in the lead, 53-37.
This comes on the heels of a SurveyUSA poll for Fresno’s KFSN-TV that shows Cardoza leading 50-44, Roll Call reports.
Traditionally, polls conducted by campaigns themselves are more likely to be made public if they show their own candidate doing well.
Cardoza was first elected in 2002. The former aide to Congressman Gary Condit challenged his own ex-boss in the Democratic primary after Condit fell into disfavor over a sex scandal involving a young woman. He then won the general election.
Cardoza’s support for President Obama’s health care proposal and other pro-Obama votes have resulted in his being slammed in anonymous postings on the Merced Sun-Star message board, but apparently have not done much to help his challenger.
“Washington is broken and our current congressman helped break it,” Berryhill writes on his website. “I had to run for Congress to stand up and stop this mess. I call on you to stand with me.”
Berryhill was endorsed by the Merced County Farm Bureau and local Tea Party members have walked precincts for him, but most of Cardoza’s backers have remained with him in 2010.
