Carly Fiorina Hospitalized
California Senate candidate Carly Fiorina was hospitalized this morning due to an infection related to reconstructive surgery she underwent this summer as a result of breast cancer.

Fiorina chief of staff Deborah Bowker released a statement saying "she was admitted to the hospital to receive antibiotics to treat this infection. While this will impact her campaign schedule today, Carly is upbeat and her doctors expect her to make a quick and full recovery and be back out on the campaign trail soon."

Bowker noted that Fiorina "remains cancer free."

The hospitalization comes exactly one week before Election Day, when the Republican is expected to give three-term Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer a close race.

"Carly is looking forward to getting back to her full campaign schedule and to defeating Barbara Boxer on November 2," Bowker said.

Boxer campaign manager Rose Kapolczynski sent her statement of good wishes.

"We wish Carly Fiorina a speedy recovery and hope she is able to return to her normal schedule soon," she said.

20. Agree. Been there, done that infections and all. Would never
vote for her but sympathize with her diagnosis and astonished that she could campaign after surgery and chemotherapy treatments. It is not unusual for infections to develop and for the reconstructive work to be removed and done over at a later date or just go without. It can be painful and heart breaking. So, I wish her well health wise and I hope she loses in the election.

Do you at least understand that a lot of the comments expressing some suspicion are offset by the qualification that we don't like to be thinking along those lines?

Your anger has failed to scare off my inner cynic. It gave her flak an opportunity to say "Hey, remember Carly is a cancer survivor" a week before a tight election while they pointed out that she remains cancer-free. I'd be interested to know how likely a procedure done months prior can manifest an infection now, while the subject is raised.

12. Here is an article that might help
The answer seems to be that its not "common" but it happens. A variety of factors, including whether an implant was used or the person's own tissue, seem to impact the frequency of an infection.

People who followed the election closely already knew that. But you have to understand that MANY folks aren't really engaged in mid term elections until right before the vote.

She's using the "infection" as reminder to voters, especially female voters.

Any infection in body has obvious signs. Such as swelling & fever. If the doctor does not detect any of those the patient would not be admitted for overnight or more stay.

But you are entitled to wearing your tin foil hat, as you said.

I also know this did not have to become public knowledge. I don't care WHAT party you are in, something like this could have been kept out of public knowledge. Personally I am concerned about her health.

I tend to think this was a calculated political move. and as I said before -- I wish her health. I am however a little turned off that she decided to let this be used for political fodder. She will be back on the campaign trail before the end of the week.

but running for senator from Cali is hardly ordinary.
If I was in her shoes, I would certainly declare that

65. Actually, MOST people demonstrating compassion...
As far as the conspiracy theorists - I don't know for sure, but it would seem that admitting to an infection could lead to questions about her ability to serve as a senator. In addition, this could be easily disproved in less than 48 hours by a determined investigator, and that would definitely cost her any shot at being elected. I will believe that it's real until proven otherwise.

My mom died of breast cancer, although Herceptin was able to give her an additional 18 months of quality time. My heart goes out to Ms. Fiorina. No matter how much I disagree with a persons political beliefs, I don't wish that kind of karma on anyone. I feel sorry for those persons who can't let loose of their mindsets long enough to feel compassion for another human being.

71. Don't be sorry...
As a teacher (she taught up until she was 75 years old - the school district didn't want her to retire), she made an impact on literally hundreds of kids. She lived a full life and died at the age of 85 with family at her side.

I take comfort in the knowledge that she made the world a better place during her journey.

69. Politics is just that, it shouldn't supersede life and common decency.
I don't consider people my enemies just because they don't hold my same political views. To wish ill on a woman suffering from cancer, or to doubt the extent of her illness, is to me beyond contempt.

:(

I'm terribly sorry about the loss of your mother. Cancer has taken so many people. I hate that disease!!!

81. Americans have become so cynical they wouldn't trust anyone.
I really can't blame people for questioning whether Carly Fiorina is faking to gain some sympathy. But, when you look at it even if she did it on purpose or is really sick, which I would be inclined to believe she is, it would not be an advantage either way since Americans are so cynical they have little or no faith in politicians regardless of the party they claim to represent.
