DE Senate--Monmouth University Poll: O'Donnell cuts Coons lead in half
A new Monmouth University Poll in Delaware finds Christine O'Donnell (R) has narrowed Chris Coons' (D) lead in the U.S. Senate race from 19 points to 10 points, 51% to 41%.

Said pollster Patrick Murray: "While Coons still has the advantage, it has to be uncomfortable knowing that O'Donnell was able to shave 9 points off his lead in just two weeks. The interesting thing is that while her vote total has risen, the majority of Delaware voters still say she is unqualified for the post."

Interesting side note: This poll was conducted prior to the publication of a story on O'Donnell's personal life that created a backlash of sympathy for her.

What story caused this "backlash of sympathy" for her?

1. There was a story here about her having a one night stand...
but I really haven't followed this race close for a couple of weeks.

This also may be that undecideds are finally making a decision.

3. sad if undecideds are going for her given her last debate performance.
but then people who are undecided this late tend to be pretty much idiots too.

5. No kidding! How in the world could anyone be undecided after the freak show...
...that's been going on - seems you'd either love the freaks or be repulsed.

8. Is there any other polling that helps support this?
A 10 point margin is still plenty comfortable for Coons but if this poll is accurate, it's just a tad disconcerting that so many people would seriously consider voting for and she went up so much in a seemingly short amount of time. Of course, McCain/Palin still got 47% of the vote in the end, so..........???? Hopefully, this is either just an outlier or will be her "peak". Either way, there's still almost no likelihood that she will be able to make up a still 10-point deficit by next Tuesday.

9. Not Buying It
The jump is too big and here is a poll from yesterday that says differently

“A new Fairleigh Dickinson poll reveals a widening gap in Delaware's highly contentious Senate race.

WDEL's Amy Cherry reports.Audio Here

The poll shows Democrat Chris Coons leading Republican Christine O'Donnell by 21 points, 57 percent to 36 percent. Dr. Dan Cassino with Fairleigh Dickinson University says O'Donnell has firmed up her Republican base, but not without great cost.

"We've seen that the voters in Delaware have become increasingly polarized about Christine O'Donnell, and we're seeing that right now, she has a very unfavorable number of 44 percent, and that is up significantly."

11. Bush got 45% of the DE vote in 2004.
That is her ceiling in this race. I expect her to do markedly worse.

13. Dude has pictures, how did he get them?
I do not understand why he tried to be anonymous about it.

If it is true then O'Donnell would know who it was and leak his name in some form so the nut jobs would go after him.

If it is not true how did he get the pictures?

14. People might be sympathizing with her at this point...
If someone gets beaten up too much, even if they deserved every bit of it, eventually they will start getting quite a lot of sympathy.

The Gawker story was obnoxious. Even I felt some sympathy for her and I consider O'Donnell a complete idiot. That we are at the point of writing stories to expose the details of candidates past dates and "sexless" flings is just really, really low.

The personal smears and attacks have just become way too much this election cycle.

15. Interesting age breakdown re who they polled...
42% were 60+, only 20% were 18 - 44

Age Race
20% 18-44
38% 45-59
42% 60+

With those numbers, this poll stinks, imo, and isn't credible.

18. There are plenty of morons willing to vote for someone
based on sympathy. It's why I have absolutely no faith in the ability of most voters to make sound judgments. Watch her keep whining about that tabloid article between now and next Tuesday. She'll keep playing the sympathy card all the way until the end. Tuesday can't get here soon enough to put an end to this crap.

19. Bull.
A poll came out YESTERDAY with Coons up 21 from Fairleigh Dickinson.

One outlier does not a trend make, and Coons is still going to win.
