Do-over for Dems on health care!
Edited on Sat Jan-08-11 12:45 PM by cilla4progress
WaPo article <Snip>

"The debate over repealing the landmark health care overhaul offers Democrats something rare in politics: a do-over.

Democrats, who were widely perceived to have blown the political messaging over President Obama's signature law, are revving up for a campaign-style offensive in an attempt to get it right the second time around."

Their offense stinks.

9. A real good job, from 2001-2007. Harry Reid and company made
sure they kept their powder dry, as all sorts of crap made it through Congress, including Alito and Roberts.

4. How could this possibly lead to a better result when ...
The Democrats are in the minority in the House and will not be able to pass Jack Squat, much less an improvement of the health-care bill, say with a public option. I'd be thrilled if it could be improved, but tell me in which universe this could happen when it couldn't even happen when we had a big majority in the House and an (almost) filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, which we have now completely lost as well.

I'm willing to be proven wrong on this, but I just don't see it.

We may get a do-over on selling it, but we'll be lucky to save it intact, as is, and not in some worsened version.

7. "We may get a do-over on selling it, but we'll be lucky to save it intact?"
Huh???

If we do a better job of selling it, why on Earth would you think we wouldn't we save it intact??

And who said anything about having an opportunity to "improve" it? The point is, it will be a political victory for the Dems in the short term, and it will help to sell improvements in the long term.

10. Because we're in a weaker position than we were last year
The likelihood is that small changes or deletions will be made to this bill that will make it less effective, and thus effectively worse. And this is not my opinion. Many policy experts have been worrying about the same thing in detailed arguments for the last week or two.

5. This is how I would do it
Don't say the other side is repealing health care reform. That will fail.

Instead, say they are voting to re-allow denials of coverage based on pre-existing conditions.

They are voting to re-open the Medicare Part D donut hole.

They are voting to kick young adults off of their parents insurance.

They are voting to reinstate lifetime and yearly coverage caps.

They are voting to raise the deficit by $230 billion.

14. They DO still have yearly caps.
It was one of the many "compromises" given away in backroom deals by DINOs.

6. Do-over for all -medicare for all.
All the reps will hold town hall meetings to determine what the people really want, and bingo -single payer universal healthcare.

In California it is above 70% that want it. Time to speak-up and get it.

8. A do-over of the messaging, not a do-over of the legislation.
A do-over of the legislation is, of course, not a good idea with a Republican majority in the House.

12. Correct. Tho a short time do-over of the messaging sets the stage for a do-over...
...of the legislation in the long term.
