The Plumline re President Obama's speech tomorrow: Moderately Encouraging Signs?
Moderately encouraging signs?
By Greg Sargent

A bunch of people today have been proceeding, with dismay, from the assumption — reported in various places — that the President’s deficit reduction speech tomorrow will embrace the Simpson-Bowles approach. But there are increasing signs that this may not be the case, and that Obama will lay out a vision uniquely his own that could — conceivably — be better than expected for liberals.

At the White House press briefing today, spokesman Jay Carney hinted that all the reporting out there today is wrong, and insisted Obama’s vision would not be based solely on any particular plan.

What’s more, other stories out there today are encouraging. The Los Angeles Times, for instance, reports that Obama tomorrow will draw a sharp contrast with the GOP by insisting on tax hikes for the rich. Crucially, the story even suggests the model for what Obama will do is the 2005 fight over Social Security, in which Dems drew a hard line on entitlements and refused to budge.

Obviously that is a very optimistic read on what will happen. But I can say that the White House has indicated to me that Simpson-Bowles will not be the primary foundation for Obama’s speech. Ezra Klein was told the same.

3. But how important is all of the dismay and protest in making sure that there is no collapse on SS?
Obama and many congressional Dems have shown an exceptional ability to cave to the RW. How much pressure do they need not just from the left but from moderates to keep them from giving away the entire store?

4. Would love to see the president endorse lifting the earnings cap for Social Security, or at least--
raise the cap to $180,000. The American people would wholeheartedly support President Obama on this recommendation.

6. People
Obama Is running for reelection. He can not compromise much anymore with Republicans.Obama and his advisors are not Idiots.
Cutting Medicare will lose him Florida and makes It hard In PA.

There have been reports that few are paying much attention to that he will raise the amont the wealthy pay Into social security as
part of social security reform to strengthen SS.Like the health care reform which will extend the life of medicare he may
propose steps to limit wasteful spending of Medicare and medicaid money.

And there have been reports he will also call on cuts In defense spending.

Now of course the Republican House will not vote on his plan. They will pass the Ryan plan which will eather not be voted on In the
House or fillbustered by Democrats. This all will be part of the 2012 campagin.
