Obama destroyed the GOP. The 38 billion in cuts turns out to be less than 15 billion.
There are only 14.7 billion in cuts to discretionary spending.
The rest was shuffling of funds and cuts to programs that had leftover funds.

...
The meat of the spending deal struck between the two parties late Friday night was revealed in a legislative omnibus released early Tuesday morning. The specifics show that finding nearly $40 billion in cuts during the 2011 fiscal year required clever accounting and, for the White House, a willingness to concede on rhetoric to find gains on substance.
For example, the final cuts in the deal are advertised as $38.5 billion less than was appropriated in 2010, but after removing rescissions, cuts to reserve funds, and reductions in mandatory spending programs, discretionary spending will be reduced only by $14.7 billion.

Boehner is going to catch major hell for this in the long run.
The Teabaggers will soon turn on him in droves.

1. This might be one case of the 3-dimensional chess actually working
Just like with the repeal of DADT.

But 3-D chess does not always work either.

3. It still means the next budget will have the base line for those
items reduced by the $38.5B.

I'm listening to "The Last Word" on MSNBC right now, and the guest just said "All this haggeling could have been eliminated if we simply wouldn't have given the tax bread on the estate tax last December. That single line item was $40 Billion!"

This whole thing is a big joke and has nothing to do with reducing expenses! It's all about giving more $$ to the rich!!!!!!

18. Oh, Absolutely! I know a lot of us liberals get angry with
Obama for giving in to the thugs, but in all fairness, he didn't have the total support of all the Dems like the Pubbies always have ALL their lemmings do for them. I think he's done very well with what he had to work with over these last 2 years. Sure he could have fought them all the way, and still only had the support of the Dems he had all along, but he wouldn't have succeeded with any health care bill, and little if any of the many other successes he can brag about now.

I don't want to be part of any "lock-step" party, but I'm convinced that for either party to gain a super majority in either house, they'd have to deal with moderates. There simply aren't enough lefties or righties to get that far.

35. They campaigned with 100b in cuts and won in a landslide
They settled for 38 which pissed off the tea baggers

In the end they got 14.7

wonder how the tea baggers feel about that?

Obama gets no respect here or in the media, People bitched because the Dems did not pass a budget before they left. And then they bitch and moan about a deal they have no idea what it contains. Look you have to plan 5 steps ahead and most people here can not even see the next step ahead. The Rethugs won in a landslide while promising 100b in cuts, the end of Obamacare, defunding NPR & Planed Parenthood. The American public made it clear with the midterms they want government cuts to lower the debt (or think they want cuts, they really have no idea, they just want the debt lowered). If the Dem controlled congress would have passed a budget with no cuts before the changing of the guard the media would have killed them for it, the GOP would have killed them for it, and the TEA Baggers would have been screaming from rooftops. If the Dems passed cuts the base would be screamed to high heaven and the professional left would be calling Obama everything but a democrat. So what do you do?

You play the game, but you play it well and hope your base will see the truth

The truth is
The GOP promised 100b in cuts, the end of Obamacare, defunding NPR & Planed Parenthood
The GOP wanted Pell Grants killed in the deal
The GOP thought this was going to be their big win after getting jobbed hard in the lame duck session. Yes we have up the tax cuts but we got so much for it (5 steps ahead)

They got 14.7B in cuts which makes the American people happy because they voted for cuts. But the TEA Baggers will go nuclear because they were promised 100B
Funding continues for Obamacare, the base should be happy But the TEA Baggers will go nuclear because they were promised its death
Funding continues for NPR, the base should be happy But the TEA Baggers will go nuclear because they were promised its death
Funding continues for Planed Parenthood, the base should be happy But the TEA Baggers will go nuclear because they were promised its death
Pell Grant Funding continues, did the GOP get anything they wanted?

Obama will now, TODAY push for tax increases on the rich. Now he clearly has the support of the American people not just his base for raising taxes on the rich to lower the debt if you believe the polls. He let them have the cuts in December which led to the end of DADT, ratification of START treaty, Unemployment extension, food safety bill, & the 9/11 Responders bill because he knew he would push for new taxes on the rich in the new year, he will have the support of all but the rethugs. The American people want the debt lowered and you can bet all Dems will be on TV explaining this is the fastest way to do it, the Rethugs are backed into a corner. If they do not give the taxes which will reduce the debt (which is what the American people voted for and want) they will be killed in the next election. What Obama failed to see was the step the GOP made by going on a suicide mission against Unions, nothing rallies the base like the GOP going after Unions, teachers, Police, & firefighters. Between these two issues the next election will not be a land side like it would have been with just the debt issue it will now be a bloodbath

Obama has taken the GOP's strong arm issue of National Debt and made it the Dems crusade, the only thing the GOP has left now is the Birther issue. Good luck with that GOP

But I dare say that is the end of that gimmick. Once the funds are raided they are gone.

40. That's 4 trillion in DEFICIT reduction in 12 years. HELLO!
Meaning he's going to find ways to make the economy grow and cut programs that don't work and programs that need to work efficiently. When things run efficiently it means it's less expensive in the long run.
