The U.S. women's soccer team has extended an invitation to President Obama to attend Sunday's World Cup championship game against Japan in Frankfort, Germany, according to Yahoo Sports.
Gunning for its third Cup championship (also won in 1991 and 1999), the U.S. team advanced to the title game with a 3-1 win over France on Wednesday, while Japan defeated Sweden by the same score to advance to its first-ever World Cup final.
The president had planned on flying to South Africa last year had the men's team reached the finals. But that plan was derailed when the U.S. men lost to Ghana in the round of 16, a game that was watched by vice-president Joe Biden and former U.S. president Bill Clinton.
The White House declined comment on the invitation.
"I just talked to
and he is getting ready to jump on Air Force One and come to see us," U.S. midfielder Megan Rapinoe said with a laugh. "I'm just kidding, but I really hope he comes here.
"Obviously men's soccer is bigger than women's, but this is a team from the USA trying to win the World Cup and we have got the nation behind us. It would be pretty cool if he was a part of that. If I got to meet him after we had won the World Cup I would just say 'Thanks for coming' - and tell him to save some room on Air Force One for us."
