Reid: Deal must have revenues
Reid: Deal must have revenues
By: Manu Raju
July 21, 2011 03:00 PM EDT

Emerging from a raucous Democratic Caucus meeting, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told reporters that Speaker of the House John Boehner and President Barack Obama were working towards a “potential agreement” on taxes and spending, adding that the proposal must include revenue raisers to garner his party’s support.

In a sign that Democrats are upset about the direction of the talks, Reid laid out a subtle warning to the president.

“But what I have to say is this: The president always talked about balance – that there had to be some fairness in this – that this can’t be all cuts that their has to be a balance,” he said. “That there has to be some revenue in the cuts, my caucus agrees with that – and hope the president sticks with that, and I’m confident he will.”

It’s far from clear whether new tax revenues will emerge in a final Obama deal with Boehner – and Republican and Democratic senators both were left with few answers leaving their party lunches Thursday. They received few, if any details, about the plan that’s in the works.

3. i thought we won
i thought everyone who doubted Obama was supposed to eat crow and apologize. And now Harry Reid comes out and says he's "hopeful" that there will be any tax increases at all. And that's "heating up"?

7. Have you seen a deal confirmed and agreed to yet?
This is what is so damned annoying about all the chatter.

NOTHING has been agreed to.

EVERYTHING is posturing and positioning.

But every single day here, every twitch and sniffle is treated like some disastrous blow to the social safety net.

NOTHING HAS BEEN AGREED TO.

4. Boehner just said "no deal" yet. But Luke Russert says "there's more chatter".
MSNBC said Boehner said if the Bush tax cuts are included (letting them expire) then no dice, but the clip they showed didn't show him specificaly saying that, so don't know for sure if he actually did.

I DID see him singing Zippity Do Dah. Is it 5 o'clock somewhere?

5. there has to be "some" revenue in the deal
i.e., it can't be a 100% GOP victory. Harry Reid is "hopeful" that after all this supposed fighting we can make it 99%.

6. Harry Reid is going to be the Dem's saving grace.
He holds the ultimate power in these negotiations, in my opinion.

We all know what President Obama is interested in; a drastic "deficit reduction" plan. He's ready to agree to a plan that doesn't include tax increases. That's exactly what Boehner wants to. But where President Obama will not succeed is trying to convince Senate Democrats to just "trust the Republicans".

9. WH: POTUS believes we need a balanced approach that includes revenues.
Edited on Thu Jul-21-11 02:38 PM by jefferson_dem
Anyone reporting a $3 trillion deal without revenues is incorrect. POTUS believes we need a balanced approach that includes revenues.
