http://www.rollcall.com/news/west_may_leave_cbc_over_carson_remark-208413-1.html?pos=hlnRep. Allen West (R-Fla.), the only Republican in the Congressional Black Caucus, said Wednesday that he might depart the 40-year-old organization in light of a controversial remark made by CBC member Rep. André Carson (D-Ind.).
At an Aug. 22 CBC event in Miami, Carson said that “some of them in Congress right now of this tea party movement would love to see you and me ... hanging on a tree.” The Congressman’s office confirmed his remarks and stood by them, according to a report on a Washington Post blog.
. . .
“One of the things I’m, you know, starting to think about is reconsidering my membership in the Congressional Black Caucus,” West said. “I don’t think that they’re moving towards the right manner in which we’re going to solve the problems, not just in the black community, but all across the United States of America.”Interesting . . . West always steadfastly defends the Tea Party and has never, to my knowledge, publicly threatened to leave the group, regardless what any of them have said or done. But a black Member of Congress says something he finds offensive and he threatens to leave the Congressional Black Caucus.
And it's kind of funny that the only affiliation of Carson's that he seems to be concerned about is his membership in the Congressional Black Caucus - as if the only thing that matters about him is his race. Otherwise, why wouldn't West just threaten to resign from Congress if he doesn't like what a fellow Member said?
(Regardless, I have a feeling the CBC is not going to beg him to stay . . .)
