I've never been a big fan of Oprah's, but she has done some really good works for people everywhere. I occasionally tune into her show, and she had some great guests.

19. I see that she bankrolled 'Dr.' Phil and her production company made money off of him.
I don't care about Oprah one way or another, to tell you the truth, I never watched her show once.

I was commenting on one thing she did that I didn't particularly care for. 'Dr.' Phil is a pompous fraud and a gasbag.

In the end, Oprah was all about Oprah making money, just like the every other 'personality' on TV.

I am neither glad nor mad that she was successful.

22. Yes, this is called a discussion forum.
I made one comment on one thing that she did that I found distasteful, it is common knowledge that she launched 'Dr.' Phil in his career of carnival barking.

I am not emotionally invested in Oprah one way or another, as you seem to be, and take personal affront at a rather mild criticism aimed at someone that doesn't even know you exist.

I don't understand the cult of celebrity, and never will.

I'm not a cult member, but I think she accomplished some good things. And during thousands of hours of shows, she's not going to appeal to everybody. I don't care for Dr. Phil either -- but so what.

She also helped put Obama in the White House, and I'm grateful for everyone who helped in that effort.

34. The data shows that is NOT true.
Childhood vaccination rates in the U.S. are as high today as they ever have been. (There was some decline in England due to vaccine controversy, but not here.)

The CDC has explained that the reason for more cases of pertussis in California is not because of lower childhood vaccination rates, but because the childhood vaccines for pertussis eventually wear off. That is why they're now recommending an ADULT version of the pertussis vaccine. Because it's ADULTS and TEENS who are transmitting pertussis to babies.

When was the last time you had a pertussis vaccine? If you haven't had the adult version, then you're part of the problem.

In fact, until Oprah and Jenny did their thing, I really didn't know much about the whole "controversy". Boy, was I surprised to find what was really going on, and you are partly right, which is why I got my adult vaccine when out daughter was born. Perhaps if Oprah had NOT have had Jenny on, I may not even have known!?

Edited on Wed May-25-11 07:34 PM by pnwmom
Everyone who can safely get the vaccine should do so because it helps all babies who are too young to be vaccinated -- or can't be vaccinated.

Unfortunately, not EVERY child can safely get EVERY vaccine. For example, Hannah Poling.

For another example, my sister -- who developed encephalitis within 12 hours of receiving her 3rd DPT vaccine at her well-baby check-up -- and died the next day. I only found this out after my son had seizures following his second DPT (non-febrile seizures -- his temp was only 102); and after my niece had a temp over 105 with her last DPT. That's when my mother told me about how my sister had died. (She had never mentioned the vaccine before, because no doctor had acted like it was important.) It's also when she told me that two of HER younger cousins had had reactions to the DTP, but their parents were told that the vaccine had been part of a "bad batch." One of the cousins had died and one had been permanently paralyzed.

So after the third cousin in my children's generation had seizures or a high fever after the DPT, three different pediatricians all started leaving out the pertussis part of the vaccine (but giving all the others). No more problems.

36. I'm not saying you are criticizing her for her race.
I'm saying that she has accomplished a great deal, despite the barriers placed on her by her race and her gender. And that she deserves some recognition for helping to break the glass ceiling for minority women and women in general.

But rather than giving her credit for that, you'd rather focus on a few guests she had -- over thousands of hours of shows -- that you didn't care for.

33. She gave a national platform to thousands of people.
So some of them were less than wonderful. That's to be expected when you have hundreds of hours to fill each year.

I strongly appreciated her "book club" and her efforts to encourage authors and reading. Millions of books by authors such as Ursula Hegi reached a wider audience thanks to her.

And, in economic terms, she is the most successful African American woman in history -- and a role model for millions of younger women. That's not playing the race card. That's a fact.

I do not hate Oprah, her show, her money, or anything about her. but what I DO hate is that she had people on who caused considerable harm, and even after the effects were shown, she never acknowledged it at all or CORRECTED the misinformation.

She lambasted that guy who made up his book, even had him back on to apologize. That was the right thing to do.

Why didn't she do that for the other people who REALLY did some harm? THAT is what I am hating on. You feel me?

43. Jennie McCarthy hasn't had any effect on vaccination rates in this country.
Edited on Wed May-25-11 07:44 PM by pnwmom
The vaccination rates never dipped -- they continued to go up during the period in question, and they've stayed at a very high rate ever since. (Vaccination rates dropped in Britain in response to the Andrew Wakefield fraud, but never here.)

I don't blame Jennie McCarthy for asking her questions. Any parent who saw her child change overnight, immediately after receiving a vaccine, would have these questions.

I strongly believe -- and so do many researchers in the field -- that there are some children who are susceptible to damaging effects from certain vaccines. Was Garth's son one of them? There's no way to know. But the NIH is funding millions of dollars in research to try to determine which subgroups in the general population are susceptible to this kind of damage, and I applaud them for this.

Just as, in years past, others who had vaccine concerns helped motivate the government to encourage the drug companies to develop a safer DPT vaccine (as opposed to the one that killed my sister).

Good for all of them.

I'm guessing that you've practically grown up with Oprah always being there, in the background. It's probably a lot easier for younger people to take her accomplishments for granted.

Whereas, for someone my age, what she did was pretty monumental.

42. Oprah is great. She took feminism to the expectation level.
Women should expect more for their accomplishments and Oprah conveyed that and presented things and things to do to fulfill themselves. We should all appreciate that.

She also stopped as talk shows went WAY trashy and profited from it. Good for her. She could have fights everyday like Bey, Springer, etc.

She also brought talking about reading (thereby promoting it) into vogue. Good for her.

There is nothing wrong with class and respect and she made it the norm.
