Paul Revere - Does anyone have a rebuttal to this in writing?

I cannot believe that NPR would defend her and it does not sound like a very good rebuttal.

1. I couldn't even read the whole interview. Palin spouted word salad filled with bits of nonsense.

Trying to validate Palin's comments reminds me of those who find codes in the phone book.

I wouldn't bother to rebut that. Rather, I'd just say that Palin was obviously just gibbering stream of consciousness babble. Anyone trying to pretend otherwise is on a fool's errand and a tool for a political light weight who has no business on the national stage.

2. It wasn't so much NPR that defended Palin
It was an academic that was hand-picked by an NPR reporter because they are old friends. The academic took a "political correct" stature, saying, in essence, yeah, she's in the ballpark on this stuff. Its some kinda weak sauce:

"he also was a bell ringer. That is, he rang the bells at Old North Church as a boy. But he, personally, is not getting off his horse and going to ring bells"

Weakness. Sad the guy would devote his life to a study of history, has the world stage for a moment, then parses words just enough to not offend the vocal minority - the ignoramuses who would most benefit from a history lesson.
