Hijab-wearing flashmob invades RightOnline conference

A crowd of women wearing hijabs — headscarves traditionally worn by Muslim women — flooded the lobby of the Hilton in Minneapolis where the RightOnline conservative blogger conference was held this weekend.

The women stayed for about ten minutes, according to Talking Points Memo, and said they were protesting the man who had addressed a headscarf-wearing woman Thursday night, and asked why she was dressed like that “in America.”

“The point was mostly that Muslim women are an equal part of this nation, and that we have an equal right to exist here,” Allison Nevitt, one of the women, told TPM.

The group were attendees of NetrootsNation, the progressive conference also in town.

A spokesperson for the group of women told TPM they weren't sure of the identity of the man responsible for the Thursday incident -- when two hijab-wearing women were followed by a man with a cell phone camera who reportedly asked them why they were dressed the way they were "in America" -- but rumors that the incident involved an employee of conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart were rampant at Netroots.

It was partially a confrontation over those rumors that caused the Breitbart kerfuffle at Netroots Friday.

I love my moderate Catholic and Protestant neighbors the same as I do my moderate Muslim neighbors. Like anyone with a clue, I'm far more worried about our home-grown X-tians.
