Ill. village that declared English official language bans El Conquistador newspaper from town hall
Source: Northwest Herald
By Chris Krug, executive editor

... But last week, I got a semi-personal email from the village of Carpentersville. It was a request, actually.

“In accordance with Resolution R07-84 which declares English as the official language of the Village of Carpentersville, the Village would like to immediately cease delivery of your publication, El Conquistador and any other information or publication that is not written in English. … Thank you for complying with Resolution R07-84 and the Village Board’s request.” – Nanette Burns, Executive Assistant to Village Manager

After reading, I thought to myself, “Hmmm ¿por qué?”

As a courtesy, we’ve delivered a copy of our bilingual weekly newspaper El Conquistador to the Village Hall for years.

1. Everyone should send a book or other things in Spanish
to their village hall.

2. Carpentersville has a lot of Hispanic people.
Some of them are very established families who have lived there for a long time. They are business people and civic minded.

This is stupid.

I admire and respect people who remain bilingual.

Many of my cousins are bilingual in German and English. My brothers and I are English speakers only. My dad married a Swede.

I don't know how many of my cousins taught their children to speak German at home. I hope that most of them did this. It is a shame when this ability is lost.

3. So, are they also banning
the use of the words "burrito", "enchiladas", "sushi", "chop suey" and "boutiques?" How does that work anyway, "ferin" words that have become part of the American vocabulary?

4. Are they going to burn all those foreign books in the library?
Willful ignorance is a harsh taskmaster; the work is never finished.

6. I'm sure they'll soon be sending a letter to all their constituents
Please do not send us any more U.S. currency, as it contains portions written in a foreign language. Until an English-only currency becomes available, your tax money is no longer welcome here.

That letter is on the way. It's in the mail. Any day now.

7. Then they need to ban the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, ...
and any other reading material with non-English names. ;-)

And, also, they need to be sued for trying to crush First Amendment rights.

8. They're asking politely
And El Conquistador can refuse just as politely. After all, from what I read on this column, there's no threat of legal action, which means that the good folks at Village Hall probably recognize that there's nothing they can do about delivery of El Conquistador. They could always meet them halfway, I suppose, and offer Village Hall a supplemental sticker to affix to the cover of the paper: "This publication is not an official communiqué of the Village of Carpentersville, which should be obvious to anyone who is not a pin-headed bigot."

Free sticker, Carpentersville!
