Venal? Shallow? Sure.

When we dem progs etc. were his big backers, he had to play to us. But we're like last years girlfriend. He's hit the bigtime now -- he's ballin with the bigsters -- and he ain't lookin' back.

I think it's that simple.

2. True!
If you have followed his career since 1990 like I have, you would have no doubts that you are 100% correct. He has done it time and again.

4. Hawk, as a Chicagoan who was immersed in following local politics,
I'm sorry that we moved to Texas in '98. I missed the rise of Obama. (Funny aside, tho: Michelle O. was a client of mine before we moved.) I can identify bullshit with the best of 'em, and he's full of it.

I knew he'd gotten the blessing and that we were in for trouble when the Rezko connection was killed in the media almost as fast as it came up.

3. When did he ever play to us?
That health insurance bill was mostly written by Republicans and the guys who control the health insurance companies. At least Obama signed that bill to repeal DADT.

6. Venal, shallow, total and very swift
He went all the way to the right really quickly. I think the whole thing was a book tour that got out of control, all about money, and getting some of it.

9. There's nobody else
Let's face it: He knew a long time ago that the Republicans would run their usual batshit crazy candidate, the Democrats can't field a candidate that raises money like Obama, and hey, if the voters don't like what he's done, oh, well. Who else will they vote for?

I haven't been this disillusioned with politics in my lifetime. There was always hope. Now, it's gone.

14. I'm a lifelong Democrat as well
I'm a "perfect voter", and have been so for the past thirty plus years. I held political office in my hometown.

We'll be threatened with the usual: "pony", "President Bachmann/Palin", bla bla bla.

I am so, so tired of voting for the lesser of two evils.

In the meantime, all the threats in the world will not make anyone over 40 vote if this White House chooses to cut one cent from Medicare/Social Security.

be downballot races of note. But any Dem that wants to sell our safety net down the river is shit out of luck as far as I'm concerned.

17. I've never been this disallusioned either
I've lost all hope too. I've also lost all confidence in myself to even pick a decent candidate because of the way Obama totally had me fooled during the campaign. :-(

25. There's an easy way to pick:
"None of the above"

Frankly, our choices are prechecked before they are given to us. Everyone else gets the boot either because they don't have the money needed to win or because they put their dick in the wrong woman.

Systemic failure. Need a new one.

8. Middle class pols with children are prone to temptation
Edited on Mon Jul-11-11 06:53 PM by Mimosa
Look at the Clintons, for instance. Once people are accepted into the ruling class, with all it confers, they don't want to go back to being regular schmos.

Because FDR and JFK were already economically solid, they seemed to be able to at least try to buck the system.

20. My theory
JFK's family was really big on service to those who had less than they did. I don't think the Kennedy family is/was perfect, but I do believe that compassion was drilled into them from the time they were very young.

Yeah, he was wealthy, but certain other parties are wealthy, too, and don't seem to feel the same responsibility.

FDR wasn't perfect, either, but he felt a responsibility to get the country back on the right track. He knew that giving a man a fish would feed him for a day, but helping him secure meaningful employment (and get his family back on their feet, too,) would far outweigh the cost to the federal government to do so.

33. Great point re: meaningful employment
Stable employment which gave people the ability to support their families and save a bit of money and enjoy life made the US a very strong nation during the 1950s. We need that type of economy. The current Hobbesian situation of all against all is making us weak.

Edited on Mon Jul-11-11 06:51 PM by TDale313
We helped him get started, thought we had a real partner, accepted that our needs wouldn't be top priority while he established himself. Now that he's made it, he'd really like (and seems to have found) a younger, prettier trophy wife who isn't such a nag. (The elusive Independant)

32. Oh, come on. That's not helpful. Every politician courts big $$$, even Kucinich. But to
say that Obama and other Democrats don't care about the average citizens is just wrong.

I'm worried. You're worried. We're all worried. But this isn't helpful. Don't get carried away. He's not evil like the Republicans say he is.
