"Progressives Are Spooked By The Deal"
As per Russert on MSNBC. Also, the baggers say they won't vote for it so maybe this time around the one who is going to have to hold his nose is the Pres as he uses the 14th.

2. I just listened to Harry Reid.
SS is on the table so Progressives (formerly known as Democrats) should be spooked.

7. All Reports Suggest That In One Way Or Another Entitlements Are On The Table
That's what the OP stated as well.

8. Don't you care about the specifics? Like, if Paris Hilton has to qualify
for SS benefits?

I would like the specifics on what we're lamenting before I buy a box of tissues, personally. ;)

9. Yes, it would be a very bad thing to means-test Social Security
Because if the wealthy know from the start that they're not going to get back a penny of what they put into the system, they are going to apply enormous pressure to be allowed to opt out. And once Social Security is no longer universal, it becomes easier to paint it as a kind of welfare for the poor and improvident and thus chip away at benefits.

A means-tested system would also be enormously intrusive. Do you really want to have to itemize all your assets and submit a tally to the federal government every year in order to quality for benefits?

10. Agree. Raising the cap would be the right thing to do
I don't understand why that's off the table so far.

11. But the wealthy are not guaranteed wealth. I pay for auto insurance
and hope I never have to make a claim.

"Do you really want to have to itemize all your assets and submit a tally to the federal government every year in order to quality for benefits?"

You have no idea what any means test might involve. My hope is that if implemented, it will not be carried out in the fashion that you suggest. A simple copy of a tax return will do.
