Parent’s fury at 10-year-old ‘supermodel’
Supermodel Thylane Lena-Rose Blondeau’s appearance in an edition of Vogue Paris has prompted fury from parents... because she’s only 10-years-old.

The mini-model was featured in the January 2011 issue – as part of a 15-page picture spread called ‘Cadeaux’ (gifts). It included shots of a heavily made-up Thylane posing seductively in a chair, bed and on an animal skin rug, with her legs and neckline bared.

The controversial pics were shown on US TV this month and reignited concern over the sexualisation of children in the media.

The debate comes as the Government announced a crackdown on inappropriate clothing and raunchy ads aimed at young kids earlier this year.

im more concerned with things like 'Kidz Bop', now thats some disturbing stuff. little kids singing serious songs about sex, love, and partying.

not really for little kids being dressed up as adults for weird reasons tho. thats to young to care about looks. that kids mental health is at risk.

33. This is more about making children into sexual objects than "too young to care about looks"
These advertisements are not directed at 10 year olds.

13. Ask the parents of tween rape victims.
or the parents of missing kids. When it's in a popular magazine, it becomes part of the culture. How many perverts are getting off on that and how many of them will take it to the next step with a neighborhood kid?
This is totally irresponsible of Vogue.

43. It's on the internet
Pervs are going to be looking.

I don't like it. I think objectifying a 10 year old encourages other 10 year olds to emulate that behavior, and others to also find 10 year olds to photograph.

When a 10 year old gets photographed just like her, but then gradually with her clothes off, what do we call it then?

Just how young do kids have to be before sexually objectifying them becomes wrong to you? Say what you like, but this is sexualizing a child. She's made up like a woman, and posed as though she is a sexual object.

36. My 14 year old wanted to watch that one night. There is a local family on there.
I never paid any attention to the show--except maybe to make fun of it--until my 14 year old wanted to watch it one night. I wasn't terribly interested until she told me that one of the families on that show is from a small town about 10 miles away from us. She said the kids at school had been talking about it. We turned it on, and it was one of the saddest things I have ever seen in my life.

At one point the mother is talking about how much the little girl "LOVES" to be in pageants and how excited they were to be going to this upcoming contest because it was a "glamor" show. The TV show was documenting some of what goes into getting ready for the pageant. They showed the little girl rehearsing in front of mom, her little sister, and a collection of dolls. They showed the meltdown when the kid got tired of being told over and over to "do it this way--start over." They showed the little sister begging mom to let her go outside. They showed the kid standing there screaming when her mom took her to get a spray tan. They showed the kid crying when mom waxed her eyebrows...

In a nutshell, it was pretty evident that not only was the kid NOT having too much fun with the whole thing, but that even the younger sibling was not having too much fun either.

I really don't think it is up to me to tell anybody how to raise their kids. I'm pretty sure that anybody that wants to, could probably find something wrong with how my kid has been raised--ain't nobody perfect, there's no such thing as the perfect family, either. I will say, however, that excluding something for health or welfare reasons, I have never dictated too much on how my kid spends her time. I can't count the number of times I have looked at her and told her to go be a kid--go PLAY, and I sure can't count the number of times that she's done stuff that was completely kid-like and all I could do was laugh and chalk it up to her "doing her job" being a kid. I might be too laid back for some folks' tastes, but I have always wanted my kid to have the opportunity to have fun while she can. Adult life sucks enough with all its demands--I wanted my kid to be free of that for as long as she chose to--ya know?

I have to wonder if the little kid in Toddlers in Tiaras has ever been allowed to be just a kid--ya know? I have to wonder if the "fashion model" ten year old has suffered that same fate.

Makes me sad.

I can't help but watch it. I want to jump through the TV and strangle every parent on the show.

NOw if the kid is 8-9 and wants to do the pageants that's one thing. However a parent can't insist that they're doing it because the kid wants to when the kid is 2.

9. Quite ugly pictures, actually - it's surprising what people think will sell goods
The "her legs and neckline bared" remark is strange - necklines and legs are bared all the time in western cultures, at all ages.

What does strike me in the photos are the ugly high-heel shoes, hairstyle and lipstick - all of which I suppose are meant to make her look older, but to me make her feet and head look very large, and the lipstick makes her mouth look as though it's been badly photoshopped in.

26. Arbus had sympathy for her subjects; this photographer has none
The child is lit and posed to make her look grostesque. The images look to be deliberately shocking; despite all the 'noise' of fashion in them, the eye is drawn to her frail body, seemingly lacking all muscle tone and her strangely large feet in even larger shoes.

35. What passes for make up today quite often doesn't make
adult women beautiful either. It quite often makes women look grotesque and artificial. What has been done to that child in those pictures is beyond poor taste. What is being done to women by the fashion and cosmetic industries in terms of image is also beyond poor taste. It is grotesque and twisted. Art for art's sake? I don't think so.

52. My fucking point is we are WAY too willing to pull out the 'porn' label
Yes, these pictures are "age inappropriate." But y'know, if we take the "porn" label far enough and get rid of everything we see as "porn," we wind up with this:

I wish I'd have kept this photo, but in the last school year we ran a photo of a fully-dressed special ed teacher in her classroom, teaching a kid that looked like he was maybe nine. She was wearing a black, fairly loose, sweater with a V-neck that she probably got at a regular department store, and a gray scarf around her neck. I thought it was totally appropriate wear for her occupation. But the prudes in this town didn't--we probably printed twenty letters accusing my paper of publishing pornography.

So can we restrict the label "porn" to actual porn?

Oh wait, we know what happened to that poor child.

Women: You are being directly told that your body and your beauty has no value past puberty.

Men: You are being directly told that your sexuality depends on having someone so much younger and weaker than you that she can't even tell if you are worth anything or not.

Is this the message that men and women want to send to each other and their own children?

Edit: I'll addend this. This kind of thing is what makes me thankful I'm a lesbian, and I've outgrown looking at women for their youth. I've adored women in their 40's and 50's for their confidence, sensuality and beauty for quite a while now, and I'm not even that age yet.
