He was trapped and helpless, 6 guys with weapons beat him to death on the street in Omaha today
Edited on Tue Aug-09-11 09:45 PM by Omaha Steve

I was driving this afternoon when I saw a commotion ahead on the other side of the road. 5 or 6 cars had stopped. Then I saw what they were doing. A woodchuck was trapped between barriers and they were moving in with ball bats, jack handles, a shovel and more. All I could do was yell "leave him alone". They paid no attention to me. Because of the barriers all I could do was drive to the next exit and turn around. After what seemed like forever I was headed for the area. The cars were driving away.

I was to late. At least they didn't leave him suffering. I called the Humane Society to come get the body. Apparently nobody driving by stopped to help the woodchuck. I'm sure he was displaced by the flood conditions in the area.

I was so ashamed of being a human today.

1. I don't understand how people can do that - what prompts them
to behave that way.

Thank you for caring and for trying.

12. Groundhogs in particular seem to do that to people.
Ask cattle-owners, and they'll tell you they hate them because livestock steps into their burrows and injures their legs. Gardeners hate them because they'll tirelessly probe a fence until they find a weakness. Motorcyclists hate them because they're big enough to throw a rider. And just the other day, half of the place where I work went offline because a burrowing groundhog chewed through a fiberoptic line.

I like them because they seem to be the very definition of the word, "obstinate."

7. There is nothing in the OP or the thread to support this
senseless projection.

6. At least you tried
It probably doesn't feel "good enough" to you that you tried to help, but it's tremendously good to know there are people like you out there. I'm sorry you had to see that; that must have been wrenching.

8. The Teaching of Reverence for Life
"The man who has the courage to examine and to judge himself makes progress in kindness. It is a hard fight for all of us to become truly peaceable.

The man who is guided by the ethics of reverence for life stamps out life only from inescapable necessity, never from thoughtlessness. He seizes every occasion to feel the happiness of helping living things and shielding them from suffering and annihilation." Albert Schweizer

peace...

15. I always support people who step in to stop a criminal or cruel act, but I always...

...remind people that it is a risky and dangerous thing to do.

I once stepped up to my neighbor who was beating a stray dog who had found its way into his yard. All I'll say here is that when someone is in a rage and violent, it can easily turn on the person who intervenes and one must be ready to defend oneself from the same brutality.
