NOTE:
I was reading an article today in the Houston Chronicle regarding the film "The Help" and they mentioned that 'soon' California 'might' be signing the Domestic Worker's Bill of Rights into law.
I can't wait to see the film. Btw the film is set in the 1960s.
But the issue of Domestic Workers Rights is still with us today.
If we take the time to look at the legislation that is currently pending regarding Domestic Workers Rights then we can be more informed than we are now on that issue.

1. After reading the book, did all my best not to get angry.
Not so sure I can take the movie either. But it clearly states the case for domestic worker's rights.

2. I wanted to see the film (haven't read the book)
until I heard it talked about on Lawrence O'Donnell's show. I think I'll pass.

3. I think Melissa Harris-Perry was a bit harsh in her review.
Edited on Thu Aug-11-11 01:53 AM by Tx4obama

I think she was reviewing from a PROFESSOR view point, surely the film can't be as bad as she said.
It's not supposed to be like a historical documentary, it's supposed to be a light-hearted, moving, inspiring film.

Oprah is pretty excited about the film.

And any film that has Sissy Spacek and Cicily Tyson in it can NOT be all that bad ;)

5. From the previews I thought it looked good
and I was suprised that MHP said it made her so angry. I used to do domestic work myself and enjoy seeing how movies handle the profession. I guess it's best to decide for yourself and not let someone else's opinion discourage you.

11. MHP isn't fit to review movies.
MHP is bigoted. Oh yes, Professor, how dare someone who isn't black use their imagination to create a story with a black point of view! Who do they think they are, wanting to entertain!

What makes me laugh at people like Harris-Perry is that her whole life is absolutely consumed, fueled, and guided by her skin color, putting her right up there with White Supremecists who also let skin color cloud every decision they make.

A perfect examply of that kind of skewed, race-based thinking is that she cannot understand Hollywood is a business, and why execs in Hollywood do no want to shell out millions of dollars to make movies that would alienate and scold the largest portion of moviegoers they need to fill the seats. Nobody is stopping you Professor from making the movie you want to tell, so quit whining and get to work.

And it is also her inherent racism that prevents her from acknowleding the fact that the one group that more than any other has utterly failed to take the lessons of the past to formulate a better future are black folk themselves, as it increasingly difficult to think of a more bankrupt and volatile culture today than 'thug life,' so intertwined it has become with almost all aspects of black culture as a whole, it is inseperable. But rather than take on that immense, Herculean, and arduous task of extracating the whole 'gangsta' permentation, she rails against a light summer movie! So brave as many black children's futures continue to be destroyed by self-inflicted standards.

13. "MHP is bigoted"?
Yes, how dare she review a movie about black domestic workers from the perspective of an African-American intellectual. :eyes:

4. I thought the book was great.
But I heard the African American community was not impressed.

It was written by a white woman and therefor probably meant for readers with a similar background.
It was eye opening for a white guy like me though and I loved the characters.

7. The actresses that portrayed the maids seem pretty proud of their work in the film
they all have good things to say about the film.

The interviews can be watched on the link below

12. There are some fantastic major characters for middle age black actresses. A rarity in Hollywood.

10. Some of my friend's Moms had "girls"
We'd make a mess of the kitchen, and a Mom would say.. "Oh, just leave it for "the girl"..that's why we pay her"..:grr: These "girls" were well into their forties:(
