Romney: ‘Corporations Are People, My Friend’ (VIDEO) - TPMDC
Romney: ‘Corporations Are People, My Friend’ (VIDEO)
Benjy Sarlin | TPMDC
August 11, 2011, 12:45PM

<snip>

Mitt Romney told an Iowa crowd on Thursday that the country should not raise taxes to shore up Medicare and Social Security because "corporations are people" too.

Responding to a question from an audience member as to why Social Security should be included in deficit talks when it doesn't add to the deficit, Romney drifted into a defense of corporate rights.

"Corporations are people, my friend," he said. "Of course they are."

After receiving jeers from the audience over the quote, he elaborated: "Everything corporations earn goes to people. Where do you think it goes? Whose pockets? People's pockets. Human beings, my friend."

3. Well, I may have been wrong in my prediction that Romney will get the GOP nomination.
Because that's the most tone-deaf BS I've ever heard from a major candidate.

7. Only problem: HIS companies are not friend to the people.
Like his Bain capital Mgmt., which appears to have just created a transient front company to give his campaign $1,000,000 in slush money for attack ads, specialized in ruining great American companies, firing the employees and selling off the dross and pieces for fantastic personal profits. Mitt is a mess.

10. That should be good for an advert or two.
Just let the video run, and then show where the money actually goes. Offshore and right into the pockets of the filthy rich.

Romney should know, he is one of them.

Mitt Romney says "Corporations are people." But he flip-flopped on his earlier statement that "Soylent Green is people."

16. To use this same argument from the left - why not, then, invest in welfare, infrastructure,
Social Security, unemployment benefits, etc. After all - everything people receiving government benefits earn goes to people...which then goes to industry, agribusiness, etc....it's not like people receiving welfare KEEP the fucking money; it goes directly into buying things corporations make.

In other words, Romney just defeated his entire argument by voicing it.

17. This will become Romney's "macaca" moment
Nitwit Republican George Allen effectively torpedoed his campaign in Virginia a few years ago by getting caught on camera referring to an opposition operative as "macaca." Allen had been fighting charges that he was racist, and had nearly succeeded in putting the issue behind him until the footage came out. I think Romney is going to run into a similar buzzsaw here. I don't think the Republican movers and shakers are terribly happy about Romney, but they could live with him if nobody else gets traction. This may be a chance for the Republicans to jettison Romney and promote someone else.

18. That's the biggest crock of BS I've heard in a long time
Are they seriously trying to convince the public that Corporations really are people????

I hope this goes VIRAL and takes him down (again).

If two corporations marry and merge and it doesn't work out and they divorce, who gets custody of the branch office children? Oh thats right - they are republican corporation-people, so the kids are left to pull themselves up by their bootstraps with no jobs, homes, or future.

Got it.

22. That's not even the worst of it...
My favorite line:
Romney responded, "There was a time in this country where we didn't celebrate attacking people based on their success. We didn't go after people because they were successful. I've watched this president go across the country attacking people..."

1) That's what happens when you step outside the billionaire bubble, Mittens. The commoners are questioning the increasing polarization of the economy.

2) YOU'RE NOT SUCCESSFUL!! BUSH WASN'T SUCCESSFUL!! MOST OF YOU ASSHOLES WEREN'T SUCCESSFUL AT ANYTHING EXCEPT PICKING THE RIGHT PARENTS TO INHERIT YOUR WEALTH FROM!!!!!

23. Truly a popular position to hold, given this economic climate.
Because as you know, we love our candidates pro-corporate and super-pro-rich!

I believe some on here were saying something funny about "if Romney's the nominee, it's all over for Obama".

The only thing saving Obama right now is that you HAVE candidates as horribly bad as (and worse than) Romney.

28. Misappropriation of corporate funds
Businesses are groups of people - both hierarchy and rank and file. If money is donated to support a political party by the hierarchy then an equal amount should be donated on behalf of the rank and file!!

corporate leaders do not OWN the company - they are employees of the company.

The Supreme Court is obviously off track. they are voting according to their political affiliation when they should be voting according to the laws of the land!!

Something needs to be done to shake up these people who have been mesmerized by the power they control! Our government is BROKEN!!

A government FOR THE PEOPLE! BY THE PEOPLE

We are in a very dangerous place right at the moment!!! The PEOPLE are not being listened to!!!!

WITHOUT A DOUBT - VOTE THEM OUT!!!! ( EXCEPT BERNIE!!!! YAY)
