So where should Libertarians go, you ask? Libertarianland under construction!
Edited on Wed Aug-17-11 02:12 PM by Ruby the Liberal
Pay Pal founder and early Facebook investor Peter Thiel has given $1.25 million to an initiative to create floating libertarian countries in international waters, according to a profile of the billionaire in Details magazine.

Thiel has been a big backer of the Seasteading Institute, which seeks to build sovereign nations on oil rig-like platforms to occupy waters beyond the reach of law-of-the-sea treaties. The idea is for these countries to start from scratch--free from the laws, regulations, and moral codes of any existing place. Details says the experiment would be "a kind of floating petri dish for implementing policies that libertarians, stymied by indifference at the voting booths, have been unable to advance: no welfare, looser building codes, no minimum wage, and few restrictions on weapons."

No welfare, minimum wage, or building codes (!) and lots of guns. What could possibly go wrong?

(No note as to what will make up the GDP or export capabilities of this new sovereign 'state', so its apparently only for those Libertarians who already raped and pillaged their way to wealth. The "base")

12. Libertarians don't need no stinkin' coastguard!
they can provide for their own safety. Anyone without the foresight to buy a life preserver deserves what they get.

5. So, who's going to be doing the scutt work in their libertarian paradise?
I'd be happy to be the first to tell them that they have to pay to get quality help - and no one works for free. Even with slaves, you have to buy and care for them. Your staff is only as loyal to you as you are to them. You also find there's always unpleasant consequences if you mistreat your help, especially if you're stuck out in the middle of no-where and you can't just kick your staff to the curb and hire new staff the same day...

They don't sound like liberty-loving individuals - they sound like frustrated, petty potentates.

7. If I did any work for them
I'd hand them a highly detailed contract they wouldn't believe. And if they failed to pay up...well, they did say there would be few restrictions on weapons out there

25. Just like those oil sheiks in the gulf, right? As I said, these folks aren't about liberty
They're about being petty kings of their own worlds.

And slaves are notoriously not a reliable workforce, unless they're in a culture where they've got some rights under the law - and a chance to earn their freedom.

Skilled slaves are hard to find nowadays - there's no longer a culture where one could be like Ceasar with his educated slaves that would be happily loyal to the death...

Of course, in the case of these Randriods, I'd be willing to set up a book for each of these paraniod robber barons with more hair than brains...
I've got these spots set up...
Chances of death by infrastructure failure (either accidental or intentional)
Chances of "accidental death by gunshot".
Chances of being wiped out in a natural disaster.
Chances of death by poisoning (either accidental or intentional) with it's corralary - death by slave revolt.

6. I want one of the top floor units
with no building codes, I'll just cut a hole in the floor and put that new toilet anywhere I want.

"You're flushing your toilet into my living room!"

"It's my floor and YOU can't tell me what to do with it!!"

"But you're flushing your toilet into my living room, you ruined my new 72" big screen HDTV!!"

"It's not MY fault you bought a bottom unit, that sounds like a personal problem to me, you know, *caveat emptor* "

:spray:

and I have a list of others they can take with them. Including Perry, Bachman, Palin ... send them all to the new "paradise".

ETA - and I forgot to mention that I'm thrilled these billionaires are doing such important work with all the money they've saved on taxes.

17. they would kill each other
When Perry, Bachmann, Palin et. al tried to foist their theocratic ways on the less religious or non religious bunch... the fight would be on.

But then that wouldn't be surprising, I have a friend who was formerly a bigtime supporter of the Libertarian party here. One quote of his that will always stick with me is " the Libertarians will never be that serious of a movement, any time you get a bunch of them in a room together, it's not long before they all want to kill each other"

Enslave them? I think an experiment like that was started that became Australia. Guess where they got their workers.
