Cats and Dogs,,,
are living and eating better than people. Have you seen some of these commericals. Anyone see the one about the dog who is reading the paper as it slides in the door and is worrying about if he is going to be okay.

See the commericals about the delectable cat food and dog products. Have at it pet lovers.

4. Amen!!! Cats and dogs are also killed by the millions
Edited on Sun Aug-21-11 06:38 AM by adigal
in this country. I do dog rescue, puppies, kittens, all killed. Go check out this page, one small Georgia shelter:

http://www.shelterrescueinc.org/id6.html

Scroll down, check out the pups and kittens killed. Some are killed because they sneeze, they say they are sick with parvo and kill them, but they generally don't kill pups here, but in many shelters they kill puppies because they are black. Gaston (Gastonia) North Carolina and Robeson, North Carolina are among the worst. Robeson kills by heartstick (long needle into the heart) and they were caught doing it without anesthesia. Gaston kills black puppies, calling them "unadoptable." Black dogs are not popular in the south, and please, don't any southerners get defensive here. I am talking about in general, the same people who don't believe in healthcare for humans are the ones I am talking about here.

5. I live in NYS and we have adopted 2 from high kill shelters in GA.
They are both great loving dogs and grateful to be here. And yes, they eat one of the best dog foods on the market. They came to us malnourished. We got them to our vets the same day they arrived. They are both now at a perfect weight. Thank God for good food so we don't have to buy that cheap stuff that is all corn and crap!

which stands for "Beautiful Black Dog". I have a BBD, a standard poodle, I got her from a family that had no time to spend with her. She's a real sweetie. As for the poor eating animal food that has to be a myth. Pet food is pretty darn expensive.

I am blessed to live in a county with a high consciousness. Only truly unadoptable dogs are euthanized. Some wait a year for their adoption.

26. Yes, flamebait. And false dilemma...
Many dedicated people around the country are making a real difference, with no-kill shelters, adoption programs, including fostering dogs and cats until they can be adopted, and spay/neuter programs.

It's not a question of killing animals cruelly or letting them starve.

6. Some of us can and do donate to pet and human causes.
You know, the proverbial walk and chew gum at the same time. I donate lots of my meager pay to our local food pantry. And my dogs eat well because it's a hell of a lot cheaper than giant vet bills for cancer (which my dogs have never had).
So thanks for the nannying OP.

And, fyi, that commercial you wrote about is for Traveler's Insurance. It's a metaphor. For people to insure important assets like their life, house, and car.

12. Uh, no, no they don't.
When's the last time you saw 4 dead baby humans, one after another, on the freeway? You seem to have no idea the horrible, horrible things that people do to animals. Humans have a chance of feeding themselves, dogs and cats mostly rely on us to feed them and care for them. You're attempt to pit animals vs. people as opposed to addressing the REAL cause of hunger/homelessness -- the greedy 1 percenters, -- is, shall we say, freakishly misguided. I hope to goddess you don't own animals.

13. ummm...where do you get that stupid idea?
Cats and dogs live at the whim of their people.

My cat needs a special diet of prescription food that costs maybe twice what high-grade store bought would...but that amount of money feeds her for a month that would feed a person meagerly for maybe three days.

Fuck off.

Homie, a dog without a home

Spring, TX - Not long ago, Homie was an adorable "must-have" puppy...the light of someone's eye.

But the light dimmed enough through the years that Homie's owner felt that it was okay to move away and leave him behind.

Just days ago, Homie was discovered by a Good Samaritan - a bit of sleuthing revealed the sad truth - he had been abandoned by a local resident who had moved.

Now Homie is homeless.

http://www.examiner.com/dogs-in-national/woman-arrested-for-killing-dog
Suffering dogs struggle for survival

College Station, TX - Esperanza is being shown compassion for perhaps the first time in her life.

Nobody knows exactly what Esperanza has been through - what is known is that her body is severely battered and she is fighting for her life.

Just days ago, Esperanza was discovered alone in the scorching heat - horribly injured and struggling to survive.

She has been taken in by the Aggieland Animal Health Center where veterinarians are desperately trying to undo the many wrongs that this abused dog has endured.

http://www.examiner.com/dogs-in-national/woman-convicted-of-animal-cruelty-after-abandoning-dog-apartment
Woman convicted of animal cruelty after abandoning dog in apartment

Bronx, NY - For six long weeks, a young Pit bull was abandoned in a vacant apartment. For six excruciating weeks, the dog suffered without food or water.

The abandoned dog attempted to survive with what was in the vacant apartment - garbage, including splintered plastic, wood and razor blades.

It goes without saying, these items were not sufficient to sustain a life.

By the time that this dog was found in January 2010, the body was so wasted that ASPCA officials had to scrape it from the floor.

19. The OP probably doesn't care about that; there
are many folks on DU who think that people who show compassion towards animals are somehow ignoring human suffering. It's bizarre, but there appear to be posters who can only care about one issue at a time, and project that one dimension thinking onto others.

Very odd.

Most cats & dogs I have ever known do not have access to the car or the ATM card, so they rarely shop for themselves:evilgrin:

responsible pet parents do not let their pets roam the neighborhood in search of wild critters..

20. Umm...those are COMMERCIALS...dogs don't read papers.
And just because you see a commercial about 'delectable' cat and dog food, it doesn't mean all cats and dogs are living the high life - it means that food is available for the rich people who want to buy it.

We feed up to 15 feral kitties and believe me, they don't get high-end food. They are out in the elements - either hot as hell in summer, or several inches of snow in winter - everyday of their lives. They are out there due to human ignorance and/or pure laziness. And this is just one shopping center, in one small town. Abandoned animals are everywhere, suffering.
My best friend is a Director at a shelter here in town - I can't even begin to tell you the horror stories. Not without crying, anyway.

Yes, humans are also homeless, hungry and suffering. It doesn't mean a lot of animals have it any better.

My daughter feeds several feral cats (who have all been spayed/neutered at her expense BTW). She leaves her garage door open a crack so they can get out of the elements during the winter.

We all do our part.

Has your daughter checked into possible TNR groups in your area? Thankfully, there was a group that did that with all the strays in this parking lot before we started feeding them. This is just one of three colonies at the shopping center. They are so sweet - sadly, the orange one (we adopted his sibling years ago - and he has now passed) isn't doing too great these days.

25. So...
We should start feeding people animal entrails, ground bones, cartilage, and other scraps people don't normally eat--all mixed up with some corn meal and wheat gluten? Because that's what the vast majority of pet food is. It's not the "delectable" stuff they show in commercials. That image is only there for the pet owners. Do you really think they're grinding up steak and putting it dog food? And, where do you think all that meat that's recalled for E. coli contamination goes? You want to feed THAT to poor people?

For every one dog or cat that is pampered, there are millions that are not, that languish in shelters-- and many of those will not even survive.

That there might be one dog pampered by wealthy owners makes you lash out and deride the millions that are suffering?
Get some perspective (and some humanity), will you?

and, last Monday I found a 3 week old kitten in the gutter fronting our home. I brought it to my wife, who dried it and, essentially saved it's life.
