Blood libel? Does Palin know what that means?
Edited on Wed Jan-12-11 11:31 AM by LuckyTheDog
Blood libel (also blood accusation) refers to a false accusation or claim that religious minorities, almost always Jews, murder children to use their blood in certain aspects of their religious rituals and holidays. Historically, these claims have been a major theme in European persecution of Jews.

I was not aware of the term before Palin used it. Isn't it funny how casually she picks out terminology from the Antisemitic Almanac of Crazy Ideas?

Dog whistle.

4. No. It makes her a near-illiterate idiot with a piss-poor command of the English language.
And that's "nazi."

9. Take her words regarding liberals and exchange it for "Jews"
Edited on Wed Jan-12-11 11:51 AM by fascisthunter
...go ahead, and read it back to yourself. I dare you! She sounds just like the Nazis did in their efforts to dehumanize a group of people they blamed all ills of Germany on.

12. No, it makes her like Loughner in her insistence that basic logic/grammar is brainwashing.
The woman IS in-coherent, so all or most of her constructions reject semantic context.

It's as though she would/could start calling a table "chair" and insist that anyone who does not agree is an oppressor - AND - that she will enforce her label for the object that the rest of us refer to as a table by any and all means available to her, including guns, and also by virtue of her special relationship with some extremely wealthy transnational forces at work in our situation.

7. Maybe
Or else, this is a dog whistle referring to the far right's conspiracy theories about liberal Jews controlling the media, George Soros, etc.

10. Think about this
When some people on the far right say "racism" they really mean "the black people hate you and think YOU are a racist, even though you are not and that is unfair."

Basically, they have turned the idea on its head to make it about whites being picked on by minorities. The message is "we are not racist any more, but THEY are. Be afraid. Don't trust them."

So, when Palin uses the term "blood libel," I wonder if she is trying to turn it into the same kind of double-edge sword -- only this time, to attack Jews.

The message: "We have stopped spreading blood libel, but THEY are now doing it to US. Be afraid. Don't trust them."

I could be over-thinking this. But I bet I'm not.

Some of the propaganda her people use is pretty sophisticated.

3. I think she had no idea what it meant.
Edited on Wed Jan-12-11 11:37 AM by SteppingRazor
I don't think she wrote that speech, and I doubt she'd heard the term before she said it. As for whichever of her handlers wrote the thing, that's a different question. I imagine they thought it meant something along the lines of "to accuse someone of murder when they are innocent" or some such. I don't think for a second they'd use that phrase if they knew what it meant, if only because Sarah Palin has presidential ambitions and conflating your own struggles over a couple of days since the shooting with the centuries-long persecution of European Jews is really, really dumb. Mind you, if they thought it'd get them votes, they'd probably be right out there repeating the actual blood libel. So, I'm not saying that Palin and her camp wouldn't use the phrase because it's morally repugnant. I'm saying they wouldn't use the phrase because they don't want to harm their ambitions.

8. I shared the Wiki page on my facebook
With only "interesting". I don't call out the conservative/Palin lovers I'm friends with, so this is my passive-aggressive way of doing it. They will know what I'm getting at.
