Cox to specialize in health care law
Ex-Mich. AG will begin work as senior counsel at firm

Former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox will use his state experience in health care regulation when he begins his new job Monday with the Dykema law firm.

Cox, 49, of Livonia, will be senior counsel in the firm's litigation department, where he will focus on health care fraud compliance and white-collar defense issues, Dykema announced Tuesday. Cox will be based in the firm's Detroit office.

Cox said Tuesday that health care became a bigger issue than he imagined in his two terms as attorney general.

"I've been in the right place at the right time to learn a lot about health care," said Cox, who has worked in the prosecutor offices in Oakland and Wayne counties. "I think that will put me in a great position for health care providers."

Cox will help clients such as hospitals deal with increased compliance and anti-fraud policies arising from the federal Affordable Care Act of 2010 and False Claims Act violations. As attorney general, Cox joined other states in a lawsuit trying to overturn federal health care reform, an issue that is proceeding through the federal court system.

Cox, a 2010 hopeful for governor who lost in the Republican primary, will handle issues related to a federal law prohibiting a doctor from having a financial relationship with a referral agency.

2. Unfortunately, this seems to be the natural progression for ALL politicians.
The revolving door always seems to lead directly to the industries they were supposed to be overseeing while in office.

Mike Cox won't run against Debbie Stabenow

U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Lansing) looks vulnerable in 2012 in recent polling, but she won't have to face one tough challenger.

Former Attorney General Mike Cox told MIRS today that he doesn't plan to throw his hat into the ring.

"I'm going to break the political rule -- you're always supposed to let your name float out there so someone can buy you off, but no, I don't," he said.

The Republican said former U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Holland), with whom he tangled in last year's gubernatorial primary, would be a good candidate. The former AG added that a senatorial run might be "more in his wheelhouse," given Hoekstra's congressional experience. He also mentioned former Dura Automotive Systems CEO Tim Leuliette and another gubernatorial rival, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard, because "he runs for something every two years."

Cox will start practicing law at Dykema's Detroit office on Monday. He also tells MIRS that he's not aware that he's been considered for any job in the Gov. Rick Snyder administration.

Wow what a shock that Cox landed at the firm that does legal work for DMC and is specializing in health care. This after he reviewed and approved the sale of DMC to Vanguard. This entire affair should be of interest to the new Attorney General. Something smells fishy! Also, if I am not mistaken, Cox got some of his buddies on the board of the new DMC and its staff or it's foundation. Only in the world of politics does something like this happen. Was a deal made with the legal firm before, during or after the review of the DMC-Vanguard deal?
