NYT: Police Arresting Protesters on Brooklyn Bridge (*wink* Looks Like they Planned Ahead)
Edited on Sat Oct-01-11 06:33 PM by Kurovski
"After allowing marchers from the Occupy Wall Street protests to claim the Brooklyn-bound car lanes of the Brooklyn Bridge and get partway across, the police cut the marchers off and arrested dozens of demonstrators Saturday afternoon.

...At 4:35, perhaps 500 people were caught on the bridge between orange nets, about a third of the way across to Brooklyn. The police let some of them walk back to Manhattan...

Police Department highway cars escorted as many as 10 Department of Correction buses from Rikers Island to Lower Manhattan in preparation for what one law enforcement official said was “a planned move on the protesters.”

9. 80-100 arrests on on the bridge today. Hundreds still trapped on the bridge
while police finish up their arrest quota for the day, apparently.

11. corralled like cattle... that sure sounds like their intent. to get them in a corner, so to speak.
Every new day, it feels like this is going to rather "national", as these new events occur.

19. It's insulting to begin with, and it has to be illegal to utterly restrict a peaceful citizen from
movement and choice of direction.

20. The netting seems to come in when some awful plan is afoot.
A group macing, a forced blockage of throughways to ensure arrests.

But i'm very imaginative, so...

26. No, it's not cynical. They're using divide-and-conquer technique to break the protest.
Cut off groups and break them up. A war of attrition:

1. The action or process of gradually reducing the strength or effectiveness of someone or something through sustained attack or pressure.

25. Not dissolve...but aviation snips will shred it in seconds.
The problem there is that getting arrested with them in your hand...you're going to face more serious criminal charges because they're conceivably a weapon. Really, they're going to throw the book at you because they're effective at:

*disrupting police containment and cutting through that goddawful orange nylon hurricane fencing like buttah!
*removing zip-cuffs.
*Pretty much cutting anything thinner than a metal roadsign...they're the tool of choice to cut body panels on cars, snip rivets and shape carbon-steel sheet metal.

I've found them various places and have used them for everything from cutting bandages off horses to cutting tin to cutting those heavy plastic packages that businesses love to put stuff in.

21. I am hoping there are clear videos of them kettling the protesters.
If they blocked them then it is not their fault that traffic was shut down. Another police action. For the life of me I cannot understand what the NYC PD have against freedom?

I think the world press will report what the US media will not.

So...so much for the lie traveling around the world. Just Atlantic to Pacific in the USA.

24. But you know how it goes...a lie travel around the world before the truth gets its pants on.
The damage to the protest's reputation is being crafted and spread. The Corporate media will report that manufactured angle heavily.

30. The blog is updated, and the old material in the OP is...somewhere else, I guess. UPDATE 11:55PM :
... many protesters said that they thought the police had tricked and trapped them, allowing them onto the bridge and even escorting them across, only to surround them in orange netting after hundreds of them had entered.

“The cops watched and did nothing, indeed, seemed to guide us onto the roadway,” said Jesse A. Myerson, a media coordinator for Occupy Wall Street who was in the march but was not arrested...

Etan Ben-Ami, 56, a psychotherapist from Brooklyn who was up on the walkway, said that the police seemed to make a conscious decision to allow the protesters to claim the road. “They weren’t pushed back,” he said. “It seemed that they moved at the same time.”

Mr. Ben-Ami said he left the walkway and joined the crowd on the road. “It seemed completely permitted,” he said. “There wasn’t a single policeman saying ‘don’t do this’.”

He added: “We thought they were escorting us because they wanted us to be safe.” He left the bridge when he saw officers unrolling the nets as they prepared to make arrests...
