PJ O'Rourke is lazy
So let me get this straight -- PJ O'Rourke, who works as a pundit, journalist, editor and a humorist (all written with tongue firmly in cheek) is soooo LAZY that when leaving to sit on a Panel on a television show Real Time with Bill Maher, he couldn't be bothered to research a tiny bit about the fellow guests with whom he would be sitting and conversing.

O’Rourke asked Grayson, “You passed econ?”
Grayson answered, “I was an economist for more than three years, so I think so…

Alan Grayson commits one of the most classic examples of UNDERSTATEMENT ever there!

Here is Alan Grayson's education background from Wikipedia, once again, for your review:

Early life and education

Grayson was born in the Bronx, New York. He graduated from Bronx High School of Science in 1975 and worked his way through Harvard College as a janitor and nightwatchman, graduating with an A.B. summa cum laude in economics in 1978.<2><3><4> He was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa and was in the top 1% of his class.<4> He returned to Harvard for graduate studies. In 1983, he earned a J.D. magna cum laude<5> from Harvard Law School and Masters of Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government.<3> Additionally, he completed the course work and passed the general exams for a Ph.D. in government.<2><6>
Grayson wrote his masters thesis on gerontology and in 1986, he helped found the non-profit Alliance for Aging Research (AAR) in Washington, D.C., and served as an officer of the organization for more than twenty years.<7>

In other words, yes! Grayson is not only eloquent and a populist - Grayson is a bit of genius and a highly educated one.

He may just know a tad more about economics (with his summa cum laude degree in Economics) than the rest of the panel but certainly more than O'Rourke (more than most of us) - I think at one point O'Rourke said something to the panel like "we all failed Econ".

But why wouldn't the rest of them know this?

Jeepers, I don't go to job interview without reading up extensively on the company, I don't volunteer without reading up some on the organization, and you can bet that if I were going to be on television, I sure as hell would know the backgrounds and leanings and biographies (at least cursory) of those sitting with me.

5. He does have the courtesy to cover his face most of the time
- not sure what that tick of his is -- that of covering his face and looking down many times when he speaks - but I do appreciate that small effort. Better if he just retired and faded, but still.

...discarded after his Lampoon days....

3. In other words...
In other words, he's probably forgotten more about economics that O'Rourke will ever know.

Epic fail PJ...

7. O'Rouke's Time Has Long Passed...
I used to get a chuckle out of his stuff in National Lampoon in the 70s...these days I'll bet he's lucky if he can get a blog post published. He's only there cause he's one of Mahrer's bong buddies...

14. Hey! Nowadays he appears on NPR's "Wait, wait -- Don't Tell Me!"
Apparently, even they must now have a Right Wing
Asshole appear regularly on their show.

Another good NPR show ruined...

20. But that show used to be one of NPR's only "Right-Wing-Asshole-Free" zones.
Edited on Sun Oct-09-11 05:39 PM by Tesha
It was kind of a nice counter-balance to most of the
rest of NPR which is almost all poshly-spoken-Right-
Wing-Assholes all the time.

12. Typical RW asshole who assumes left-wingers are "economic illiterates".
Edited on Sun Oct-09-11 03:46 PM by Odin2005
It's very common for the "Intellectual Right" (what an oxymoron, LOL!) to call all criticisms of RW Economics "economic illiteracy" and accuse it of being based on "bleeding-heart emotionalism rather than cold, hard facts" about how the world "really works".

This attitude is extremely common among Libertarian types that work in "hard numbers" fields like engineering and accounting, these kind of folks are very intelligent but are incapable of thinking outside the box. And I am personally embarrassed by some of these people because many of them have autistic tendences, most of the posters at a Asperger's site I used to frequent are Libertarians with just that sort of attitude. :(

15. He's a typical extremist
He was a self-described Maoist in his 20s who changed into a radical libertarian by his 40s. He used to make some good points in the past, but most of his stuff has always been useless because he naturally gravitates to the most extreme ideas he can find. He's not much different from David Horowitz in that respect.
