but we have such a long way to go to set things right that I'm discouraged a little also. Torture, hunger, poverty, unemployment and the never ending war are a lot to fix.

Edited on Tue Oct-11-11 04:14 PM by truedelphi
Week of September 03ed 2001. I was informed I was in line for a promotion - and then Sept 11th happened and my company had to fire all the new hirees. (I was one of the new hires.) I realize my loss pales in comparison to what other people suffered.

So I now am always pessimistic whenever I feel optimism coming on.

15. Give me 10 stout hearted men... and women!
Edited on Tue Oct-11-11 03:59 PM by JuniperLea
I'll forgive the omission in this old tune that is dear to my heart... the sentiment is fitting...

Give me some men who are stout-hearted men
Who will fight for the right they adore.
Start me with ten, who are stout-hearted men
And I'll soon give you ten thousand more.

Oh! Shoulder to shoulder and bolder and bolder
They grow as they go to the fore!
Then there's nothing in the world can halt or mar a plan,
When stout-hearted men can stick together man to man!

You who have dreams,
If you act, they will come true.
To turn your dream to a fact
It's up to you.

If you have the soul and the spirit,
Never fear it, you'll see it through.
Hearts can inspire other hearts with their fire,
For the strong obey when a strong man
Shows them the way.

Sigmund Romberg/Oscar Hammerstein II

23. Yes! A populist movement that's angry at the correct motherfuckers is just what we need.
It'll pressure the coward "Dems" in Washington to start giving us what we want, it'll likely get the Repubs and their pants-on-head-drooling-stupid teabagger followers thrown out of Washington in droves - this is what we need to change this country and change it in the right direction for once.

Considering the Congress is essentially shut down through Nov. 2012, how can I be optimistic?

27. Hmmm, good question. I felt optimistic when I got here but I have
been reading DU for about 3 hours. Now I am back to being confused. I am hopeful regarding the protests though - it seems the best thing that has happened since W go in. As to the coming election? DU cannot seem to unite on this.

49. That is good to know. I do have a few people that I usually just do
not read. I trust DU - we do argue a lot and it can be depressing but most of us are together on what needs to happen if we are even going to have a chance.

not truly optimistic yet...

This is an excellent start. But it needs to continue for quite awhile and I wonder if Americans really have the stamina to endure months of continuous protesting. It is the only way to be heard now.

This needs to snowball indefinitely--to become something they cannot ignore.

31. No, we still have some massive issues to address
At some point, we either have to address our debt or just go ahead with the default. I think we manage to go another 10 years on our current path before we have to make some changes.

At least Europe is addressing their debt, we are not. We are pretending that it doesn't exist. The Republicans will play their games with Obama now, but they will spend like drunken sailors when they regain power.

You hear a lot about "class warfare" these days. Once the economy recovers, that will pass. We will then see "generation warfare" as baby boomers age into their late 80s and 90s, causing massive strain on the minority of Americans who are active in the workforce. The elderly will have such a huge sway in politics and it will cause a massive divide between the working class and the retired class.
