Heman (sic) Cain Supports Pro-Life Amendment

A remarkable public policy journey is completed.

by John Hayward

10/24/2011

The end of a saga that began with “Herman Cain’s Pro-Choice Moment” moment came on Saturday, when Cain declared himself in favor of a Constitutional amendment to outlaw abortion entirely.

“Yes. Yes I feel that strongly about it. If we can get the necessary support and it comes to my desk I’ll sign it. That’s all I can do. I will sign it..”

(snip)

Also, Cain’s still missing an important point in his response to Brody’s question about a pro-life amendment. When he says “That’s all I can do. I will sign it,” he’s wrong. That’s not all he can do. It will matter a great deal whether or not he uses the bully pulpit of the presidency to advance that cause. He’d better be ready for some pointed follow-up questions in future debates.

The problem with "that's all I can do" is that he can't even do that! http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1011/Cain_would_autograph_life_amendment.html">Presidents don't sign Constitutional amendments.

1. They have the option of doing so, but it is a mere symbolic move
In the Constitution there is no formal role for the president. The president can sign an approved amendment, but it carries no weight if he does or doesn't. I think Abraham Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment after its passage.

2. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862.
The 13th Amendment wasn't ratified until December 1865, nearly eight months after Lincoln was assassinated.

3. He signed it after it passed both chambers of Congress, before being sent to the states
That was on January 31, 1865.

4. This keeps happening to Herman Cain.
He keeps spouting off and then having to take everything back because he didn't understand the concept and put his foot in his mouth.

Remember his comment about banning mosques?

And negotiating with terrorists?

And now this?

Good grief.
