Add "Legalize Marijuana, yes or no" on the 2012 ballot and let the people (democracy) decide.

The legalization of Marijuana and regulation the same as alcohol should be the peoples choice and should be put on the 2012 ballot This is important to ensure we have a democracy.

Edit: Sign petition. Let us back them in a corner.

1. Good luck.

So far they have 24,999 reasons to weasel out, but that's just a small proportion of DU membership. It can be done.

3. you really think you'd win that battle?
I think "no" would win in a landslide that made Roosevelt vs. Landon look like a horse race.

7. Current polling has it roughly 45% legalize, 55% keep illegal
Edited on Sun Oct-30-11 10:58 AM by jeff47
So probably wouldn't be a landslide. If there was an actual debate on it, those numbers would probably move.

9. polling doesn't mean voting
unless they are polling likely voters.

I remember debate on it. In the 1992 Presidential debate, they were asked about legalization and all three Republicans - Bush, Clinton and Perot said "absolutely NOT!" Kinda lame, but I am guessing that all three of them knew which way the wind was blowing.

12. 1992 was 19 years ago
Literally an entire generation of voters has been born since then.

In order for there to be your predicted massive landslide in an election, polling would show a much, much larger gap.

4. Rescheduling is the first step.
It doesn't matter if we vote for legalization (which we likely would), Cannabis will still be illegal based on the schedule I status.

8. There's no reason it couldn't simply be taken off schedule
Put into the same status as tobacco and alcohol WRT the Controlled Substances Act.

If it's legal, it's no longer controlled.

6. I don't think the White House has the power to put referendums on the ballot.
If somehow it was on the ballot, I don't think it would carry any legal weight even if it succeeded.

I think the war on marijuana does more harm than good, but I don't think this petition can achieve anything.

11. I understand what it is.
I just don't see how it can achieve anything. Sorry.

13. The POTUS and executive branch lack the ability
to put referendums on 50 state ballots. I'm pretty sure not every state even has a ballot referendum system.
