Canadian official: We could sell oil to China if Keystone fails
Canadian official: We could sell oil to China if Keystone fails

What exactly would Canada do with all that oil they’ve got in Alberta if U.S. regulators say: “Thanks, but no thanks,” to the Keystone XL pipeline?

Well, the Canadians would probably find someone else to buy its million or so barrels of oil each day — probably China — and the U.S. search for independence from foreign oil would go on, says Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources Joe Oliver.

Oliver is in Houston this week to address industry leaders at the World Energy Council. As part his goodwill tour, Oliver has met with industry and government leaders in Washington D.C., New York and California to extol the pipeline’s potential to move heavy crude from our northern neighbor to the Gulf Coast refineries. He also took a few minutes to talk with me about the Keystone XL and energy policy in North America.

What happens if the Keystone XL pipeline isn’t approved by the State Department?

First of all, we do believe it will be approved because we think there are very strong reasons for the secretary of state to find it in the national interest: first, national security; second, jobs; and third, economic growth.

1. How does Albertan tar-sands oil help the US in its "quest for independence from foreign oil"?

3. "foreign oil" is code word for those who fund terrorism or have an adversarial relationship
With is.

The Canadians are friendly. You also won't hear us complaining about how much oil we get from Mexico.

6. Same thing that Canada is doing with much of it's lumber now, sell to Japan and
China as well as other East Asian countries. The demand for Canadian lumber fell off to the US, so they now sell much of it over seas.

9. It's true
It's just that a pipeline through the Canadian Rockies would cost a hell of a lot more than the Keystone project. But if those who are against the Keystone project prevail, that is exactly what will happen, especially when oil prices rise to $200 a barrel, if they're still pricing in US dollars at that time.

12. Ironic your NY Icon. Canadian oil
if not sent via pipeline would likely go on tankers for transport through the canal systems bordering NY to get to the open ocean and go anywhere.

14. Its probably not much more expensive to pipe it through BC than to the Gulf Coast
There are already two pipelines to the Pacific Coast.

Keystone goes all the way to the Gulf of Mexico, mainly because that is where the biggest US refineries are and it is where the pipeline networks to distribute refined products start from.

11. Joe Oliver is a flat out liar and manipulator.
Just because it is shipped through the US does not mean the US is the only country allowed to buy it; are people stupid enough to believe this?

Oil is sold on the international market, just like other commodities. Yes, the oil that Exxon drills in the Gulf is sold on the international market, too.

13. WTF what a morally lacking non-sequitur

Just because we don't want your dirty pipeline running across our nation has NO bearing on the economics of selling us the oil vs trans-shipping to China!

For fucks sake are you kidding me?

Go screw yourself and sell it to China dickhead.
