Vatican stunned by Irish embassy closure

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/vatican-stunned-irish-embassy-closure-131052801.html

Catholic Ireland's stunning decision to close its embassy to the Vatican is a huge blow to the Holy See's prestige and may be followed by other countries which feel the missions are too expensive, diplomatic sources said on Friday.

The closure brought relations between Ireland and the Vatican, once ironclad allies, to an all-time low following the row earlier this year over the Irish Church's handling of sex abuse cases and accusations that the Vatican had encouraged secrecy.

-snip-

The source said the Vatican was "extremely irritated" by the wording equating diplomatic missions with economic return, particularly as the Vatican sees its diplomatic role as promoting human values.

-snip-

The Cloyne report said Irish clerics concealed from the authorities the sexual abuse of children by priests as recently as 2009, after the Vatican disparaged Irish child protection guidelines in a letter to Irish bishops.

so the pricks at the vatican are "extremely irritated". not as 'irritated' as the kids/parents who were sexually abused.

4. Wow! this is BIG
I'd read that the Catholic church had been losing members in droves after the child abuse scandals (that Ireland has to pay for the church.)

It would be GREAT if this misogynistic fairy-tale spouting pedophile-protecting wildly wealthy beyond dreams religious relic were shuffled off to museum status only.

5. Ireland has pretty much dumped the Church
And yes, it is true.

In fact, the #1 religion in Ireland these days is Buddhism as strange as that may sound.

There are little temples popping up all over the Emerald Isle, including one on my relative's property!

Can't say I blame Ireland. They've more than paid their price for all of this Catholic crap (as my relatives call it) over the last few thousand years or so!

6. I think it's good news that bodes well for the future of Ireland
I could only wish that some of the nutter religious right in this nation would have a moment of clarity and evaluate where compassion figures into their fire and brimstone view of the ways of god.
