A universal public health insurance...

...would relieve businesses from :

Providing health insurance for employees
Workers' Comp health insurance
Vehicle health insurance

These are costs that kill small business.

It would relieve the taxpayer from paying for outrageously expensive proportional costs for private insurance for public employees.

A single public health insurance system would bring down costs of lawsuits. Many of which are suits to cover future health care costs.

A single public health insurance system would bring down costs of prescription drugs due to sheer volume purchasing by the government. Just like the rest of the modern world enjoys.

A single public health insurance system would do away with the complicated Medicare system which is a semi-privatized mess.

A universal health insurance program paid by a simple payroll deduction, like FICA, would liberate the people and businesses of this country and have an economic stimulus affect that would be profound.

1. It's time to start pushing for Universal Single payer again.
The country is more open to change now. People are finally starting to wake up and see that the corporations/politicians/media have been feeding them a steady diet of lies for years.

4. The public may be more open to change...
...but they're all set to hand the Senate to the GOP in a year. And they already have the House.

Good luck.

6. Agreed
We can't get this accomplished until 2015 at the very least, and that's only if we retain Obama, and get Congress back in the 2014 elections.

2. I think there may be some confusion here as to the purpose of Workers Compensation?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Workers'_compensation

Workers Compensation was designed to protect the employer not the employee.

The right to sue the employer was traded off for WC.

7. And what would be wrong with that concept
when it comes to health care coverage?

The current system produces great uncertainty for long periods of time for people who are genuinely hurting. When and if a settlement is reached, the first people to get paid are the lawyers and the expensive expert witnesses, and the guilty are protected by gag orders. I don't see how anybody can justify that system, unless you're a trial lawyer.

3. It would improve career mobility, too. Many are "stuck" wherever they can get the insurance.

14. Would also encourage employers to hire older people because they won't have to worry

about the older employee running up the cost of the employer's insurance.

10. Agreed, except for the payroll deduction piece. Why let capital gains off the hook (again)?

11. knr ...
it helps to acknowledge that Dems took it off the discussion table, first Clinton and then Obama.

Also that it is not the same as a public option.

13. Yeah but the one thing it doesn't do is make mountains of money for the insurance cartels.
They are the 3rd most powerful cartel in the country, just below the oil cartels and the banksters.
If you want to government to do it, first you have to get them to agree to it.
