Mayoral candidate Carol Moseley Braun this morning sharply attacked former President Bill Clinton's endorsement of Rahm Emanuel, calling it "a betrayal to the people who were most loyal to him."
"President Bill Clinton does not live or vote in Chicago," said a statement issued by her campaign. "He's an outsider parachuting in to support another outsider. For him to come on the day following Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday to insert himself in the middle of a mayoral race, when the majority of the population and mayoral candidates are African American and Latino, is a betrayal of the people who were most loyal to him. It's a mistake."
Her comments echoed earlier remarks by Rep. Danny Davis, a former mayoral candidate, who had contended Clinton risked jeopardizing his standing with the African-American community by endorsing Emanuel, who at one time was a senior adviser to Clinton.
The other major mayoral candidates, Gery Chico and Miguel del Valle, took a different tack in reacting to Clinton's visit, criticizing Emanuel rather than Clinton. They questioned Emanuel's role on the board of Freddie Mac, the controversial mortgage giant. Clinton appointed Emanuel to the Freddie Mac post in February 2000.
Clinton on Tuesday not only gave a ringing endorsement to Emanuel during an appearance in Chicago,
but also helped him ring the cash register at a fundraiser.
