Right wing terrorist attempt to bomb Martin Luther King Parade
'Domestic Terror': Bomb Found in Backpack Ahead of Spokane MLK Parade
By: Emily Rauhala

The F.B.I. says the device could have caused "multiple casualties." Thankfully, it was found — and diffused — before the march got underway.

In what feels like a callous affront to King's legacy of non-violence, an improvised bomb was placed along the Martin Luther King Day parade route in downtown Spokane, Washington on Monday.

The suspicious backpack, which contained an improvised explosive device (IED) and two t-shirts, was found less than an hour before the festivities began. The march was re-routed and the bomb diffused.

Given the timing and the placement of the bomb, the F.B.I. believes the motive was political: “We're certainly approaching it as a potential domestic terrorism event at this point,” said spokesman.“Whether the motive was racial or an individual was being targeted, it's too soon to say.

11. From the LATimes...
The area has a history of white supremacist activity. Until 2001, the Aryan Nations was headquartered in nearby Hayden Lake, Idaho. As recently as April 2009, the Spokesman-Review newspaper reported that residents of a Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, subdivision had found Aryan Nations recruitment letters on their lawns.

White supremists would not agree with Democratic values (tolerance with all ethnicities).

5. There's something very strange about this story
The local news is reporting it differently

Suspicious downtown suitcase contained clothes

Jan 19, 2011

Spokane police and the bomb squad investigated a suspicious package found this morning on a sidewalk near the Maple Street Bridge and Spokane’s historic Carnegie Library. Members of the Explosive Device Unit were called to the area to check out a black suitcase left upright on the concrete at the southwest corner of Sprague Avenue and Cedar Street shortly before 7:30 a.m.

A preliminary electronic scan indicated the suitcase was not a bomb, said Officer Jennifer DeRuwe, police spokeswoman. The case turned out to contain clothing, she said.

10. So, it was "diffused" after all, rather than "defused"?
