Abramoff represented the gambling interests in neighboring states and didn't want competition for his clients, so that made me his number one target since I was promoting a state lottery. I was Rove and Canary's number one target because I was a popular Southern Democrat. I had just brought in five (5) automobile plants, started 1000 school building projects, had made a name for Alabama among education and child advocacy groups...but more importantly, I was getting a majority of both the black and white voters of Alabama...unheard of since the Goldwater sweep in 1964! Moreover, I was being touted as a presidential candidate to look out for, "a dark horse" by The Kiplinger Letter (a national business journal) and I fear, most importantly, I was the ONLY Democrat nationally to be endorsed personally by Charlton Heston, head of the National Rifle Association. I think Rove knew that I was coming after his boss, George W Bush, as soon as I won my re-election in 2002, and he was right.

We have sworn testimony before the House Judiciary committee from a Republican lawyer that Karl Rove encouraged my prosecution.

And, most importantly, documents that would prove government misconduct have been withheld from us by the government, the prosecutors and now the Department of Justice since 2001. We filed a FOIA (Freedom of Information Act0 request in 2006 and even the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, John Conyers, couldn't get DoJ to give us the documents. They are now the subject of a motion for discovery before a federal magistrate judge.

Countless letters have been written to the President and to Eric Holder and there continues to be stonewalling from DoJ. I can only imagine that the documents and witnesses like Abramoff would open a Pandora's box, and there are many powerful people who simply do not want that to happen.

Joan, if Abramoff would open up and tell what really happened in Alabama it would help because Eric Holder could not ignore it. The coverage would be too great. I am expendable unless light is shined so brightly Eric Holder will have to take notice.
