Congressional Republicans think they (and the frozen pizza companies) know better than USDA nutritionists about what should go in school lunches.

10. And some say that history doesn't repeat. Well it is tomato paste this time instead of ketchup.
Is that progress? Change comes slowly sometimes. Maybe in 20 years the Republicans will concede that for a slice of pizza to be a vegetable it has to include a sprig of broccoli as well.

44. Yeah, but back then the Republican Senator with the most claims to expertise on ketchup,
took to the floor of the Senate to speak against it. I wish the CSPAN archives went back far enough. Teresa Heinz mentioned that he had done this in an interview she had on food.

49. Don't know about taking the floor, but Sen. John Heinz did say, "ketchup is a condiment, not a
vegetable." So will Herman Cain stand up and say that "tomato paste is a pizza ingredient, but it doesn't make a slice of pizza a vegetable." Yeah, like we have time to wait for that to happen.

20. It happens on both sides
And it happens against the desires of the people.

Granted, my husband only qualifies as anecdotal but he consistent that the government should not be deciding what people eat (me too, actually). The House GOP stunt is absurd to him. Boehner and the rest engage in this tripe over the objection of (one of) their constituents.

Meanwhile, while the progressive base of the Democrats howl for an end to shipping jobs overseas, corporate tax dodes etc we have Jeffrey Immelt advising the President on economic policy, of all things.

The 99% this is being used and abused includes work-a-day republicans too.

27. The two tablespoons of tomato paste on a slice of carbs + cheese is the problem.
Just like a cherry on top of an ice cream sundae does not make the sundae a serving of fruit, the dollop of tomato paste on a slice of pizza does not make it a serving of vegetables. Most reasonable people understand this and that is why this will come back to bite the pubbies. They are going to wish they had never heard of frozen pizza before this is all done.

Edited on Fri Nov-18-11 11:45 AM by aint_no_life_nowhere
It must be some kind of health drink for kids, if the corn lobby is paying Boner enough money to say it is. It probably contains as many healthy elements from the original corn as a processed dab of tomato paste contains of the original tomato. And high fructose corn syrup must be healthy, too.

And the Republicans are specially promoting the potato (french fries) as a healthy vegetable. I think schnapps is made with potatoes. But you've probably brought joy to Boner's heart by writing that about vodka.

41. So, how will they redefine a pesto pizza?
As a herb? (basil)
Or as a nut? (pine nuts)

A pizza is a dish/meal. That is, a combination of other foods, some (or all) of which are vegetables and the rest manufactured by humans. How about we redefine the frozen-pizza corporations as vegetable seeing as how they too have more than two tablespoons of tomato sauce in them.

I'm wondering if this insane response is a direct result of Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution...
