Spoof of '12 Days of Christmas' prompts debate
Thursday's story about a school choir performing a spoof on the "12 Days of Christmas" that includes the partridge getting shot and the turtle doves having their necks wrung has hit a nerve with readers.

Despite a parent's complaint that it's inappropriate, the "12 Days After Christmas" will be sung by eighth-graders at the Fruitport Middle School holiday concert next month, according to Fruitport Community Schools Superintendent Bob Szymoniak.

The song depicts a rant by the recipient of the gifts that include calling birds with obscene language, seven swans that drown and fake gold rings.

Szymoniak said the song is all in fun, and some commenters agree:

4. I was thinking that America is becoming a nation of violent
reactionaries.

I'm all for spoofs, but, gee, shouldn't they involve funny things instead of wringing animal necks?

12. places a formal distinction on so many things otherwise identical...
Intent? That which places a formal distinction on so many things otherwise identical is not very convenient for the dogmatic moralist....

14. I don't think you can generalize about all of America based on this one instance.
So quit your whining about what "America has become" ;)

3. wow...as a kid I was in a VERY conservative/prestigious elementary school
and we had a huge spoof of the "12 days of christmas" that the parents loved (it was part of a bigger musical mocking a few christmas songs and traditions)...And this was back in the mid-80s

Granted, I don't remember how similar it was to the one in the story, if at all

7. On the first day of peace my government said to me "there will be no World War III."
12-days parodies are always fun, and it's even better if they get under someone's skin.

and it really is amusing.

Words and someone singing it: http://xmasfun.com/Lyrics.asp?ID=82

My favorite line: Well actually I kept one of the drummers.

The 12 Yats of Christmas. (For those of you uninitiated, "Yat" is a term for NO citizens, who tend to greet each other with "Hey Darlin', where y'at?"
